Santiago del Collado: Church, Sierra and Trails

Santiago del Collado lies on the northern slope of the Sierra de Piedrahíta. To the east, the village overlooks the Valle del Corneja. From the N-110 road, the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol and the houses surrounding it form a distinctive village landscape.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol has a polygonal apse, a single-nave layout and a freestanding tower bearing a large coat of arms of the Alba family. A 17th-century portal connects the church with the sacristy. The main chapel is vaulted by a hemispherical dome decorated with paintings influenced by classical and folk traditions. The main altarpiece dates from 1767 and was created by the Salamanca-born artist Manuel Vicente del Castillo. The altar of Saint Lucy dates from 1664.

Architectural forms, paintings and dates can be considered separately during a visit to the church. Architecture and mountain scenery can be included in the travel itinerary as independent focal points.

Mountain Scenery and Air Sports

The Puerto de Peña Negra is located within the municipality of Santiago del Collado at an altitude of 1,909 metres. The pass connects the Valle del Corneja with the Alto Valle del Tormes. Various international air-sports competitions have been held at the Puerto de Peña Negra, including a paragliding world championship. The Puerto de Peña Negra is considered a suitable location for air sports.

The pass, valleys and air sports represent different thematic layers alongside one another. Those combining several interests can give architecture, mountain scenery and hiking routes different weight in their own travel plans.

Trails and Waypoints

After crossing the N-110 at kilometre 15.9, the Sendero de la Umbrela reaches the Alto de Santiago. It runs around the Risco de la Umbrela and extends across the Valle del Corneja and the Valle del Caballeruelo. The Ruta de Las Solanillas reaches Santiago del Collado at kilometre 8.1 and then continues through the district of El Collado. From Valdelaguna, the Risco de la Umbrela can be reached on foot in about an hour after leaving the vehicle there.

The different kilometre markers, route sections, reference points and approximate walking time provide several parameters for planning the pace of your day. The combination of the village landscape, altitude, air sports and route sections offers different perspectives on the same place.
