Pajares de Adaja – Mudéjar Tower, Festive Traditions and Landscape

Pajares de Adaja is represented by a striking landmark and long-preserved traditions: the monumental tower of the Mudéjar church is visible across the plain. The carnival tradition includes songs composed by tío Martiniano; over an extended period from the time before the Spanish Civil War until the end of the 1950s, he organised carnival groups there.

Culture and History

Pajares de Adaja’s oral tradition includes lullabies, nursery rhymes, round songs and carnival songs. The traditional forms therefore range from sung childhood moments to communal and festive songs.

In 2020, the feast day of San Juan Bautista in Pajares de Adaja fell on 25 June. Also in 2020, the feast day of the Virgen de Rivilla fell on 8 September. The celebrations for San Juan Bautista included a traditional bonfire on 23 June 2026.

Pajares de Adaja’s cultural resources include the Ermita de la Virgen de Revilla. The Ermita de la Virgen de Rivilla is located on the outskirts of Pajares de Adaja next to the cemetery. Francisco Méndez Álvarez was born in Pajares de Adaja in 1806.

Many inhabitants of Pajares de Adaja traditionally supplemented their work through carting and transport trade (arriería). The settlement history also stretches far back: the area around Pajares de Adaja preserves traces of prehistoric settlement, Bell Beaker pottery was found in Valhondo, and remains from Roman times have been discovered at various sites in the municipality.

Nature

Pajares de Adaja lies in the flat northern areas of the province of Ávila, in the so-called Campo de Pajares. Pinares del Adaja is an ecotone where farmland, a pine forest of Pinus pinaster and riparian woodland meet.

Pajares de Adaja has an interesting area of pine forests. The PIO Pinares del Adaja can be reached by parking the vehicle next to the information sign and walking a few metres to the edge of the pine forest; from there, it offers a viewpoint over the Adaja corridor.

In La Moraña, hundreds of roads, tracks and firebreaks connect the various municipalities through cereal fields, pine forests and Castilian steppes. The combination of a single viewpoint and an extensive network of paths can be considered separately when planning.
