Candeleda lies on the southern slope of the Sierra de Gredos, at the foot of Almanzor, Portilla Bermeja, Casquerazo, Hermanitos and Risco de la Ventana.
Nature and Trails
The SL-AV 1 Senda de Chilla leads from Plaza del Castillo to the Santuario de Chilla and is 8.81 km long. The PR-AV46 route begins at Plaza del Castillo in the centre of Candeleda. A gently sloping birdwatching route leads from Candeleda to the Observatorio Municipal de Aves and offers panoramic views of the Sierra de Gredos.
The Paseo Fluvial de la Garganta de Santa María runs along the left bank of the gorge. Canoeing is possible on the Embalse del Rosarito within the municipality of Candeleda. The natural swimming holes of the Garganta de Santa María are used by locals and visitors in summer; they include Charco Palomas and Charco Carreras, which are used for swimming during this season.
Culture and History
The Museo Etnográfico de Candeleda presents the collections “Celtas al Sur de Gredos” and “La Candeleda Medieval”. Casa de las Flores currently houses the Museo del Juguete de Hojalata. The Santuario de la Virgen de Chilla dates from the 16th and 17th centuries; in this place of lush vegetation and scenic beauty, Candeleda’s patron saint, the Virgen de Chilla, is venerated.
The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de El Raso displays original pieces from excavations and offers a visual tour from the Bronze Age to the Christianisation of the Vetton sanctuary of Postoloboso. The interiors of the museumified houses at the Castro de El Raso are currently inaccessible because a fire destroyed them in 2024. El Prao de la Carrera is a fortified Bronze Age castro dating from around 2300 BC.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
The annual Romería to Nuestra Señora de Chilla takes place on the second Sunday in September and was recognised as an event of tourist interest by the Secretaría de Estado de Turismo on 16 February 1980. Retumbaleda is a Christmas gathering of the traditional Caldero and Zambomba rounds from Candeleda with rounds from other nearby towns. La Moragá is celebrated on 1 November, following Candeleda’s tradition, as an outdoor day when young people roast chestnuts in the traditional way.
One of Candeleda’s traditional Sequeros de Pimiento has been converted into an Aula Temática del Pimentón. Cheese can be eaten fresh, matured or coated with paprika.

Getting There
From Madrid, the official access route follows the A-5 towards Badajoz; after 150 km, take exit 148 and follow the CM-5150 towards Candeleda to the provincial boundary of Toledo, then reach Candeleda via the AV-910.
