Navalonguilla – Nature, Water and Culture in the Gredos Massif

Navalonguilla lies on the northern slope of the western Gredos Massif. The municipality is located in the valley formed by the Garganta de los Caballeros, which is a tributary of the Tormes. Nature

The Laguna de los Caballeros lies in a glacial cirque bordered by the Riscos Altos mountain range and the Campanario barrier. The PR-AV 40 Senda de la Laguna de los Caballeros is an 11-kilometre hiking route that follows an out-and-back trail. The combination of a clear distance indication and a defined trail type makes it easier to compare with the other, differently characterised landscape features in the municipality.

Hiking and Water

Monte del Tormal and Risco del Jichuelo can be reached from Navalonguilla via the same path at the eastern end of the village. In the municipality of Navalonguilla, there are attractive swimming pools at several points along the path beside the Garganta de los Caballeros. El Puente is a riverside recreation area with barbecue facilities and an adjoining pine forest.

El Perdigón is the furthest away of the swimming spots mentioned and is about a twenty-minute walk from El Puente. In the upper part of Navalguijo, the Pinar de Navalguijo lies along the path to the waterfall and the source of the Garganta de los Caballeros.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Navalonguilla was built from granite blocks in the 17th century. It has a single-nave layout divided into three sections. The Ermita de San Miguel is located in Navalguijo, a hamlet belonging to Navalonguilla, and probably dates from the 19th century. The Ermita de la Virgen de los Leones stands on the outskirts of Navalonguilla and was built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A Stations of the Cross leads from the parish church to the Ermita de la Virgen de los Leones.

For 2020, the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción festival in Navalonguilla was scheduled for 8 September; the San Miguel celebrations in the associated village of Navalguijo were scheduled for 29 and 30 September.
