Discover Burgohondo: Abbey, Trails and the Alberche

A distinctive tradition in Burgohondo is the Vaquilla festival in honour of Saint Sebastian. At its centre is a wooden cow's head figure attached to a round pole. A young man carries it, chasing and frightening people with it while entertaining them at the same time. The festival takes place on the Sunday closest to 20 January, the feast day of Saint Sebastian.

Culture and History

Inside Burgohondo Abbey there is an 18th-century altarpiece and wall paintings dating from the late 13th or early 14th century. The paintings depict the Passion of Christ. The abbey complex comprises an atrium, a church and the former monastery. The church is divided into three naves covered by a wooden structure.

The Ermita de la Santa Vera Cruz, known locally as the Ermita de los Judíos, is the only evidence of the Jewish presence in Burgohondo. Today, it is used as Burgohondo's tourist office.

Trails

Burgohondo has three signposted and officially approved hiking trails. The long-distance GR-10 trail also runs through the municipality.

The PRC-AV 12 La Cendra-El Espino route begins at Parque de los Bomberos and ends at Jardines de El Zaire. The PRC-AV 14 El Tejar route is a circular trail starting and ending at Jardines de El Zaire. You can sort the different route types according to the desired course. The details of the start, finish and route type make the two local routes distinguishable even without a general route description. When selecting the desired course, this allows you to distinguish between a connection between two points and a circular trail; the GR-10 is listed separately as a long-distance trail.

Nature and Water

The Paraje de La Mata consists of a narrow, dense pine forest. To the south, it gives way to the fertile riverbank area of the Alberche, with its natural pools. Near the former mill in the Paraje de La Mata, there is a small natural area with play features integrated into the surroundings for families with young children.

Puente Arco is a bathing area on the Alberche River with rapids, rock slabs and sandy areas suitable for water sports. The shallow bathing area of Tabla de Abades is about two kilometres from the built-up area; inflatable boats can be used there, and beginner canoeing courses can be held. Puente Nueva has a lawn for sunbathing and publicly accessible picnic areas.
