Casavieja: Zarramaches, Nature and Outdoor Routes

Casavieja lies on the southern slope of the eastern Gredos Massif. The town's natural surroundings are home to a permanent trail-running centre recognised and accredited by the RFEA.

Nature

Casavieja has a mild climate and lush, diverse vegetation. Pastures, forests, orchards and the water of the ravines flowing down from the Sierra have always formed the basis of Casavieja's local prosperity. At the Fuente Helecha nature area, the municipal swimming pool is located next to the campsite; it is equipped for adults and children.

Routes and Activities

In cooperation with CD Calamochos, Casavieja presents some of the best hiking and cycling routes through the town and neighbouring municipalities. These outdoor routes include the Calamochos Bike Race, with two courses, and the Calamochos Trail, featuring a half marathon and a cross-country race. The trail-running centre has a signposted short green route suitable for beginners. This short route starts and ends at the Fuente Helecha nature area. Short circular routes, cycling routes and competition formats can be considered as different focal points when planning.

Culture

The Zarramaches tradition in Casavieja, in the province of Ávila, Spain, takes place every year on 3 February; its masquerade is recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural, meaning an Asset of Cultural Interest, and features two festive figures portrayed by the Quintos. During the masquerade, the figures proceed from the town hall along Casavieja's main streets to the church at the entrance to the town. There, they attend Mass and process around the church; the newer settlements at higher elevations are not visited.

The festival in honour of Saint Bartholomew takes place on 24 August, with a solemn Mass at the parish church of San Juan Bautista followed by a procession through the town's streets. The Church of San Juan Bautista has a four-storey tower. Carnival in Casavieja includes five days of dancing led by the Quintos and three costume parades. Casavieja is also one of seven municipalities taking part in the annual rotating cultural project Mascarávila, which showcases local dances, music and masquerades.

Annual Cycle

From the first weekend in December until the Saturday before Christmas, the folk groups of the Pastores de Casavieja walk through the town's streets every weekend, singing Rondas and Christmas carols. Casavieja's traditional Zambombada takes place on the Saturday before Christmas.
