Discover Arévalo: Mudéjar Culture, Nature Trails and Holiday Apartments

Arévalo has been designated a Historic-Artistic Site (Conjunto Histórico Artístico) and is an important example of Mudéjar architecture in Ávila.

Culture and History

The Castillo de Arévalo dates from the 15th century and was converted into an artillery fortress in the 16th century at the behest of the Catholic Monarchs. The Iglesia de San Martín is known as the church with two towers: “la de los ajedreces” and “la nueva”. Its southern arcaded gallery is one of the few surviving examples of this architectural feature in the province of Ávila. The Iglesia de San Miguel is recognized as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).

The Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza is located in the Casa del Concejo on Plaza del Real, above the Oficina de Turismo de Arévalo. It presents information about the local flora, fauna and grain. The Ermita de la Caminanta is a small 16th-century chapel built from dressed stone blocks. It stands at the exit of the Puente de Medina and at a junction of several routes, including the Camino de Santiago from the Levante. At the AREVALORUM Museo de Historia de Arévalo, free guided tours are available for groups of at least six people.

Nature

The Paseo fluvial follows paths along the Adaja and Arevalillo rivers for just over 4 kilometers and crosses several medieval Mudéjar bridges. With a little luck, herons, kingfishers and deer can be spotted along the Paseo fluvial.

The Senda de la Fuente de los Lobos is an approximately 14-kilometer circular route that starts in Arévalo and offers opportunities to observe steppe birds. The information about the length and type of route can be compared separately for personal day planning.

Routes and Classification

The Camino de Levante passes through Arévalo, which belongs to stages 23 and 24. Arévalo is located on the A-6 motorway. The pilgrimage route, riverside promenade and circular trail are therefore different types of routes and can be considered separately when planning.

Tostón, or suckling pig, is a specialty associated with Arévalo. The Jornadas Gastronómicas Tostón de Arévalo take place every year in February or March.
