Culture

On 15 May, Velayos holds a festival in honour of San Isidro Labrador. The celebration includes a procession to the fields for the traditional blessing of the crops. This October festival includes a novillada at the bullring “Real Maestranza de la Soledad”.

History

The archaeological sites in the municipality of Velayos include El Torreón and Prado Serrano. Another notable structure is the Torreón de la Puebla de Valderrábanos: the square tower with a cubic cross-section was built from horizontally arranged bricks of Arab type and stands on a base made of large blocks of grey granite. The Torreón is in a dilapidated condition and presents a high risk of collapse.

Approximately three kilometres northeast of Velayos, directly behind the railway line, stands the preserved, towering structure of the abandoned settlement of La Puebla, known as La Aldihuela.

The parish church Iglesia parroquial de Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción de Santa María de la Vega y Lugar de Velayos is located less than 300 metres west of Velayos, on the crest of a gently sloping hill.
