Barajas: Piedra Aguda, Culture and Fiesta de San Roque

Barajas is situated within the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park and combines striking landscape features with preserved traces of local life. Piedra Aguda lies at an altitude of 1,816 metres and offers views of the surrounding landscape. Las Chorreras complements this elevated landmark with a landscape characterised by numerous small cascades of crystal-clear water.

Nature

Around Barajas, different natural landscapes come together: the high-altitude Piedra Aguda with its views and Las Chorreras. Both places are also connected by routes linking Barajas, Navarredonda de Gredos and other named points.

Routes

Ruta 1 Piedra Aguda connects Barajas with Navarredonda de Gredos. It is considered easy and accessible, begins in Barajas and heads towards Fuente de los Cazos. Ruta 5 Las Chorreras connects Navarredonda de Gredos and Barajas through the southern part of the municipality. On the return journey, it follows the Arroyo de Mesegoso to Barajas. The two routes differ not only in their named destinations but also in their course: Ruta 1 focuses on the starting point of Barajas, Piedra Aguda and the direction of Fuente de los Cazos, while Ruta 5 includes the southern part of the municipality and the return route along the Arroyo de Mesegoso.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Benito Abad in Barajas is a parish church dating from the 14th century. Its interior is characterised by three naves separated from one another by wooden columns. It also has a two-part bell tower with an external staircase.

Next to the Iglesia de San Benito Abad, Barajas has a Potro de Herrar in front of a forge. The Potro is no longer in use today, consists of four stone legs and has a kind of yoke at the front. An old bellows is still located in the forge. The church, forge and horseshoeing structure thus represent different types of evidence of the locality, without equating their functions with one another.

According to local legend, the Ermita de San Antonio Abad was built between Navarredonda and Barajas to house a statue of the saint. The tradition of transhumance is also part of the area's heritage: it continues to be practised in Navarredonda and Barajas, with some livestock owners still carrying it out in the traditional manner.

Festivals

The Fiesta de San Roque in Barajas is associated with 16 and 17 August. The first day includes the auction of the young men's bull, a mass and procession, followed by the auction of Banzos and a tasting of Picadillo and lemonade for those present. The second day includes a communal paella in Las Eras and horse races with ribbons.
