Vega de Santa María is located in the hilly landscapes of La Moraña on the right bank of the Adaja River. The town can be reached via the N-403, which connects Ávila with Adanero.

The historical and cultural traces are distributed across different places and forms of expression. In the town centre, medieval origins, the development into a seigneurial town and preserved architectural remains are the main focus, while art, literature and culinary traditions form further distinct themes. Natural traces complement this picture with visible evidence beyond the purely historical connection to the town.

History and Architectural Heritage

Vega de Santa María has medieval origins and became a seigneurial town in the 15th century. Remains of the palace built by its lords have been preserved in the town. Outside the town stands the Mudéjar church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. It is currently closed and is not used for religious services.

The historical points of reference therefore differ in their location and current status: the palace remains form part of the townscape, while the church lies outside the town and is currently not accessible. This distinction remains just as important for classifying the architectural heritage as the medieval origins and the later history as a seigneurial town.

Culture and Art

The Museo VSM consists of around a dozen sculptures and coats of arms made between 2011 and 2015. El Maestro is a moving sculpture on Calle Barreros depicting a person reading and teaching. During Holy Week, poems by Lope de Vega continue to be recited in Vega de Santa María. Together, these examples showcase public art, a small museum and a continuing literary tradition.

Culinary Traditions

Hojuelas, flores and retorcíos are part of the typical carnival cuisine in Vega de Santa María. Montenevado is a traditional dessert from Vega de Santa María. These dishes combine a seasonal custom with a distinctive dessert, creating a culinary focus alongside history and art.

Nature and Historical Traces

Pino Gordo is a stone pine with a trunk diameter of 1.52 metres and a height of approximately 32 metres. At Alto de San Pedro are the remains of the vanished settlement of San Pedro, including bricks and roof tiles. Here, a single striking natural monument stands alongside material remains of an earlier settlement.

When choosing a holiday apartment for Vega de Santa María, travel dates, accommodation category and cancellation conditions can be considered independently of one another. The accommodation decision thus stands alongside the town features described: medieval history, art, carnival specialities, Montenevado, landscape and the traces of the vanished settlement of San Pedro remain identifiable as separate themes.
