San Esteban del Valle – Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartment

San Esteban del Valle is located in the Valle del Tiétar on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos, in the Barranco de las Cinco Villas and at the foot of the Puerto de Serranillos. This pass connects the Barranco with the middle Alberche Valley. The townscape is characterised by dense development and narrow, steep streets; vineyards and olive groves surround the town.

Landscape and Trails

The Mirador de San Andrés is located next to the hermitage of the same name and offers views of San Esteban del Valle and the Sierra de Villarejo. The Mirador de La Llana is located on the road to the Puerto de Serranillos. There are parking spaces there; the view extends down to San Esteban and across the entire Barranco.

The Parque de la Chocolatería is designed as a picnic area with parking spaces, barbecue areas and a natural river pool. Next to it, on the way to Villarejo, lies the Piscina natural de la Garganta, which also has a picnic area and barbecue facilities. The various viewpoints and waterside areas each offer a distinct focus, ranging from landscape views to outdoor recreation.

The hiking trails in the Barranco de las Cinco Villas are generally considered short to medium-length routes with a low to moderate level of difficulty. Most of them are marked with signs or coloured markings. The Entre San Esteban y Santa Cruz walking route is 3 km long, has a pavement between San Esteban and the Mirador de San Andrés, and has little traffic.

The SL SEV-3 hiking route starts and ends in San Esteban del Valle. El Vahíllo is listed as 5.1 km long, with an elevation difference of ±375 m and an estimated duration of 3 hours. In total, seven signposted itineraries start from San Esteban del Valle. The different distances and time estimates make it easier to compare the routes when planning.

Culture and History

In the town centre, the Ruta de las inscripciones leads to inscriptions, dates and even skulls carved into stone. El Rollo commemorates the jurisdictional autonomy that San Esteban del Valle attained with the title of villa in 1693.

The complete Stations of the Cross along the AV-P-706 includes five crosses beside the road; the remaining crosses are located around the Ermita de San Andrés. The Ermita de San Andrés de La Majada was rebuilt in the 18th century. It houses the image of Santo Cristo de la Salud, which is carried outside during Holy Week.

The Ermita de San Andrés de La Majada may stand on the site where the church of the now-abandoned village of La Majada once stood. A stone bridge still stands in the nearby ravine on the old road from San Esteban to Santa Cruz. This road may have passed through the former settlement of La Majada. The Ermita de San Pedro Bautista was built from hewn stone blocks and has a portal with a round arch.

The festivals also preserve distinctive traditions. San Antón is celebrated on 17 January with a procession and the blessing of the traditional Roscas. The El Vítor procession is accompanied by a processional banner; the faithful wear red neckerchiefs and carry torches, riders take part, and Décimas are recited afterwards.

Wine and Local Tradition

The Casa del Barato is a traditional workhouse that has been converted into the Centro enológico sensorial del vino y del aceite. The centre presents grape cultivation, the grape harvest, fermentation, and the production and preservation of wine. Visitors can turn the large wooden screw of the wine press there.
