Guisando: Culture and Nature in the Sierra de Gredos

Guisando lies within the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park and was declared a historic, artistic and picturesque site in 1974. The village therefore combines a historically shaped townscape with a landscape where trails, viewpoints and nature observation are closely connected.

Culture and Festivals

The local cultural life includes Carnival, which is celebrated in a chapel on Shrove Tuesday. Residents wear traditional costumes and dance to the sound of a gaitilla. Afterwards, the municipality invites everyone to lemonade and sweets. The festival calendar also includes Saint Michael’s Day on 29 September. Festivals in Guisando also include popular celebrations, a communal meal with bull calf meat in the square and, occasionally, a traditional music group.

This places a chapel tradition, a fixed date in the annual calendar and communal celebrations in public spaces side by side. The cultural impressions range from music and traditional dress to sharing a meal in the square.

Landscape

The Nogal del Barranco platform is located four kilometres from the village of Guisando. It is home to a monument to the Iberian ibex, the centuries-old Nogal del Barranco walnut tree and a group of well-preserved shepherds’ huts. A route leads from the platform to La Mira. At this point, the village combines a monument, an old tree and preserved evidence of traditional pasture use with a trail into the mountain landscape.

Trails and Nature

The Casa del Parque El Risquillo provides information for planning hikes and other activities in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park. A signposted route passes through the most beautiful places in Guisando and conveys the area’s history, culture and heritage. At the end of the road to Hoyuelo, Guisando has an observation point for astrotourism.

Nature observation also has its own focus: the Nogal del Barranco site in Guisando is considered a place of particular interest for birdwatching in the province of Ávila. Guisando has natural swimming pools at the campsite, in El Risquillo and along the river. The route, viewpoint, birdwatching and swimming pools thus represent different ways of shaping a stay around activity, landscape and water.

Getting There

Guisando is 150 km from Madrid. The journey follows the Comarcal 501, the Alcorcón–Plasencia road, as far as Arenas de San Pedro, and then continues along a five-kilometre provincial road to Guisando. For geographical orientation, the distances should be read separately: the 150 kilometres refer to the route from Madrid, the four kilometres to the distance to the Nogal del Barranco platform and the five kilometres to the final provincial-road section.
