El Hoyo de Pinares: Nature, Trails and Culture

El Hoyo de Pinares lies in the so-called Tierra de Pinares on the southern slope of the Sierra del Malagón. The municipality is home to a unique stone pine specimen called Pino Castrejón. The tree is more than 16 metres high and has a maximum crown width of 25 metres.

Nature

The natural heritage of El Hoyo de Pinares is included in the Natura 2000 network. The town is also designated as a special protection area for birds (ZEPA). The area contains one of the few sites in Castilla y León where dense stands of native stone pines grow. In some places they form pure stands, while in others they are mixed with black pines or resin pines. The two reservoirs on the Becedas River enrich the local ecosystem.

Trails and Discoveries

The Ruta del Agua runs around the Becedas I and II reservoirs (La Puente and Valdedomingo). It offers an easy, accessible trail suitable for children. The Ruta Mina Ceferina is 12 km long, has a medium to high level of difficulty, takes four to five hours and begins at the El Batán Recreational Area.

El Batán is a well-preserved 17th-century grain mill and a point of cultural and historical interest on the Los Molinos route. Near San Vicente there is a well-preserved Visigothic necropolis with around twenty graves. Mina Ceferina is a former copper, lead and zinc mine from the 19th century, now integrated into the natural surroundings as a geological gem.

The two named trails represent different ways of structuring a day: the Ruta del Agua connects the Becedas reservoirs with an easy, accessible route suitable for children. With its twelve kilometres, four to five hours and medium to high level of difficulty, the Ruta Mina Ceferina offers a different time and physical framework for planning.

Culture and History

In the historic centre of El Hoyo de Pinares stands the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel, a 16th-century church in the Herrerian style. The local folk repertoire mainly includes seguidillas and jotas. The traditional Romería de la Virgen de Navaserrada takes place on the last weekend of May at Pasaje del Fresne.

Flavours and Traditions

Pine nuts are the most characteristic natural product of El Hoyo de Pinares. They are used in numerous desserts, meat or fish stews and the typical Revuelto de morcilla.
