Fresnedilla is located on the Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental, an important livestock drovers’ route of the Mesta. The village is also situated on the eighth stage of the GR 180 route; the trail is officially approved by the Mountaineering, Climbing and Hiking Federation of Castile and León. Activities available in Fresnedilla include hiking and mountain biking. Horse riding is also one of the possible activities for exploring the landscape.

Culture and history

The parish church of Ntra. Sra. de la Purificación in Fresnedilla dates from the 16th century and has a single-nave structure with a hexagonal wooden ceiling. El Caño, a former washhouse, is located on the Cañada Real. A Roman spring at Las Eras has been restored and signposted.

The village square of Fresnedilla is regarded as a Plaza de Toros and preserves burladeros, the Rollo and pillars to which the barriers were formerly attached. The history of the village is reflected in its sacred architecture, historic structures and preserved elements of the village square, although these sites do not belong to the same period.

Festivals and customs

The feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is celebrated in Fresnedilla on 13 June with a Eucharistic celebration, a procession and an auction of Banzos. Nuestra Señora del Rosario is the patron saint of Fresnedilla; her feast takes place on 7 October or on the first weekend of October. During the celebration, the Quintos sing the Ronda a la Virgen at the church door.

On the weekend after Epiphany, rams decorated with paper flowers are led through the village streets to collect chorizos. The Luminarias of Las Candelas include jumping over bonfires.

The customs take place at different times throughout the year and also differ in form: processions, singing, collecting processions and jumping over fires each represent distinct traditions.
