La Adrada – History, Landscape and Culture

In La Adrada, the restored Castillo de La Adrada houses the Centro de Interpretación Histórica del Valle del Tiétar. In twelve halls, the centre explains the history of the valley’s early inhabitants, including the Vettones, as well as the influence of the Romans, Visigoths and Muslims, the medieval lordships and traditional rural life. Models, texts, illustrations and audiovisual presentations are used for this purpose.

Culture and History

In the immediate vicinity of La Adrada lies the Castillo de La Adrada, a sight considered a castle. It can be dated to the 14th century; Rui López Dávalos had a church built on a hill outside the settlement fortified for this purpose.

A Gothic church with Herrerian influences was begun in the 16th century under the direction of Pedro de Tolosa, the construction manager of the El Escorial monastery. A simple 16th-century chapel houses the image of the Virgen de la Yedra, the patron saint of the municipality, in its inner altarpiece. A 16th-century building belonged to the Hieronymites of El Escorial.

Landscape and Nature

The Presa de La Pinara is a natural reservoir prepared for bathing in the gorge of the Arroyo Hornillos, with picnic areas. The Pino Aprisquillo is more than 400 years old.

Escusa is considered a summit and is a landscape feature in the vicinity of La Adrada. Also in the surrounding area are Alto del Mirlo, a landscape feature considered a summit; Cerro de la Encinilla, a landscape feature considered a mountain; and Cabeza de la Parra, a landscape feature considered a summit.
