Discover Muñana: Churches, the Sierra de Ávila and Regional Traditions
Muñana lies in the Valle Amblés at the foot of the Sierra de Ávila. Its centre is home to the Iglesia de San Esteban Protomártir.
Culture and Townscape
Its projecting chancel is reinforced by prismatic buttresses. The entrance portal dates from the second half of the 16th century.
The main altar of the Iglesia de San Esteban Protomártir, crowned by a Calvary scene, dates from the 18th century. It is the work of the draughtsman Miguel Martínez de Quintana, who came from Salamanca.
Next to the old cemetery stands the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Zarza. It has a rectangular floor plan and a small bell gable at its foot.
Its entrance consists of a round-arched portal protected by a porch. This porch is supported by three stone columns.
The townscape still features several houses of traditional architecture with small awnings on their façades. On the feast day, the image from the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Zarza is carried in procession to the parish church.
Routes through the Valle Amblés
The official one-day cultural route “Ruta por el Valle Amblés. Ávila - Villatoro - Ávila” passes through the Valle Amblés and the Sierra de Ávila, as well as through Muñana.
The route returns to Muñana and then continues north on the AV-120 towards San Juan del Olmo.
A road starting in Muñana leads to the Ermita de las Fuentes and San Juan del Olmo. It connects the Valle Amblés with the towns on the northern slope of the Sierra de Ávila.
The three routes mentioned take different approaches: the official route is designated as a one-day cultural route, the AV-120 describes the onward journey north, and the road from Muñana identifies the Ermita de las Fuentes and San Juan del Olmo as additional points of reference between the Valle Amblés and the northern slope of the Sierra de Ávila.
