Horcajo de la Ribera: Mountains, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Horcajo de la Ribera is one of the villages located at an altitude of over 1,300 m in the Sierra de Piedrahíta within Santiago de Tormes. From here, panoramic views extend across the Tormes Valley and the Sierra de Gredos.

Nature and Landscape

The peaks of Risco de Pajaritos, Cabeza Pelada and Risco de la Umbrela, as well as the Alto de las Becedillas mountain, are located around Horcajo de la Ribera. A gorge runs through the village; its water irrigates the meadows, passes through La Aliseda and then flows into the Río Tormes. The historic landscape of Horcajo de la Ribera included two small oak-covered hills and a communal pasture called Boyal, covering an area of 400 fanegas.

Hiking and Views

The Cross de los Pastores trail runs almost entirely along roads, paths or forest tracks. In its trail version, it is approximately 27 km long and includes around 1,150 m of cumulative positive elevation gain. The start and finish are located at the Plaza Mayor in Horcajo de la Ribera. The Cross de los Pastores also includes a short 12 km mountain race with a cumulative elevation gain of 400 m. The different distances and elevation gains can be compared directly with one another.

The shared hermitage of Horcajo de la Ribera and Navasequilla lies 2 km in the direction of Navasequilla, offers views of the Ribera del Tormes and the Sierra de Gredos, and can be reached on foot. The La “Cama de la Virgen” viewpoint overlooks the Ribera del Tormes, the Circo de Gredos, Horcajo de la Ribera and its hermitage; the rock formation consists of a large, unusually shaped boulder. Santiago de Tormes is also home to the Mirador estelar de Horcajo de la Ribera stargazing viewpoint.

Culture and History

The parish church of Horcajo de la Ribera is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. Horcajo de la Ribera is one of the villages in the northern Gredos whose predominantly religious cultural heritage is shaped by churches and hermitages that stand out for their architecture, sculptures, altarpieces and paintings.

The wider region around Horcajo de la Ribera is home to the Castro Celta El Raso archaeological site, the Cascada del Diablo historic site, the Santuario de Nuestra Senora de Chilla monastery and the Plataforma de Gredos park.

In the third week of June, Horcajo de la Ribera and Navasequilla hold a joint Romería at the hermitage belonging to both villages. Horcajo de la Ribera’s patron saint festival in honour of Santiago Apóstol takes place on 25 July.

In the case of Horcajo de la Ribera, it is assumed that, like other villages in this area, the settlement developed between approximately the 10th and 12th centuries from temporary shepherds’ huts or pastures into a permanently inhabited settlement. The “la Purísima Concepción” hermitage in Campo Urbín served public worship and was maintained by the faithful.
