Nigoi: Castro, Monte Espiñeira and Historic Routes
Culture and History
The Castro de Entrecastrelos is located in Nigoi.
A chapel dedicated to the Virxe da Piedade once stood about 40 metres from the present-day church.
The façade of Nigoi church features a profiled portal with a semicircular arch, pilasters, a frieze and a semicircular niche.
The semicircular arch, pilasters, frieze and niche give the church façade a clearly articulated architectural form. The Castro de Entrecastrelos and the former chapel of the Virxe da Piedade stand alongside the still-existing church as different historical traces: a castro, a former religious building and the church that remains today.
To the south, near Revolta da Xesteira, the historic Camiño Real led towards Nigoi.
Landscape
Monte Espiñeira, between Nigoi and Arcos de Furcos, is considered an extensive mountainous area with gentle elevations and a viewpoint over a large part of the parishes of A Estrada.
Monte Espiñeira is home to a group of three large rocks with clearly pronounced hollows.
At Pedra Longa on Monte Espiñeira, one of the rocks might possibly be about 40 metres long.
The landscape of Monte Espiñeira combines gentle elevations with striking individual rock formations. The three large rocks are characterised by their clearly pronounced hollows. At Pedra Longa, there is also the cautious assessment that one of these rocks may reach a length of about 40 metres. Its location between Nigoi and Arcos de Furcos, together with the view over a large part of the parishes of A Estrada, gives the mountainous area its geographical context.
Waterways
The Baeiros flows through the area of Nigoi church, takes the name río da Braña there and joins the Liñares a short distance away.
The Regueiro Revoltón rises between Revoltóns and the Fonte das Perdices spring, flows through Maceirón to the Baeiros stream and continues via it to the Liñares.
The Regato de Zon forms the boundary between Nigoi and Parada.
The Regueiro de Soutiño flows through Cortes, Devesa and Carballeira and subsequently reaches the Liñares.
Several named watercourses shape the immediate geographical structure. The Regueiro Revoltón begins between Revoltóns and the Fonte das Perdices spring, reaches the Baeiros via Maceirón and follows its onward connection to the Liñares. The Regueiro de Soutiño follows a different course through Cortes, Devesa and Carballeira before also reaching the Liñares. The Regato de Zon, by contrast, marks the boundary between Nigoi and Parada.
Routes and Festivals
The PO-841, also known as Santiago-Vilapouca, crosses Nigoi from north to south.
The Congostra do Gardal leads from Casteliño to Escariz in Nigoi.
The north–south route of the PO-841 and the course of the Congostra do Gardal refer to two different routes within Nigoi. While the road is known by the name Santiago-Vilapouca, the Congostra do Gardal connects Casteliño with Escariz.

Festivals in Nigoi include the patronal festival of the Virxe María on 15 August and the festival of San Roque on the following day.
The two festivals mentioned follow one another immediately: the patronal festival of the Virxe María takes place on 15 August, and the festival of San Roque takes place the following day. Thus, alongside the historic routes, the local festival calendar is anchored by two consecutive August dates.
