Nature and Trails

A route from Bueu leads to Cabo Udra. It is signposted. Along it, you can see unusual “chozos”. These are structures built by shepherds for shelter among numerous rocks. The route also features abandoned military batteries.

The route thus brings together different traces of the use of the same landscape: the structures built by shepherds and the abandoned military installations. Both elements are located along a signposted trail to Cabo Udra and together form part of the route’s described landscape.

There are four hiking trails on Ons Island. They are marked by colour and signposted. The trails are shown on the national park maps. The Ons Archipelago has been designated a Special Protection Area for Birds since 2001. The designation is known as ZEPA. The archipelago is also included in the special conservation area “Ons-O Grove Complex”. This is abbreviated as ZEC.

The information about the four trails combines their colour coding and signposting with their cartographic representation in the national park. The designations ZEPA and ZEC refer to designated protected areas in which the Ons Archipelago is included.

Culture and History

The Museo Massó is housed in the former Massó canning factory in Bueu. One section of the museum is devoted to maritime ethnography. Other museum sections concern the canned-fish and salted-fish industries. Shipping is also covered by the museum.

The former use of the premises as a canning factory thus stands alongside the museum sections dealing with maritime ethnography, the canned-fish and salted-fish industries, and shipping. The site therefore preserves both its connection with the former factory building and the maritime themes mentioned above.

The Iglesia de Santa María de Cela is a Romanesque church building. In the 12th century, it was built by the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. This order later became known as the Order of Malta.

The Iglesia de Santa María de Beluso has a 16th-century structure with a Latin-cross floor plan. Later additions give the church stylistic features ranging from the Romanesque period to Neoclassicism.

The two churches therefore present different historical details side by side: Santa María de Cela is associated with the Romanesque building and the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, while Santa María de Beluso preserves its 16th-century structure and later stylistic additions.

The Calvary in the vicinity of the Iglesia de San Martiño de Bueu dates from the second half of the 17th century. There are only three monuments of this type in Galicia.

Festivals and Film

The SonRías Baixas Festival takes place every year on the first weekend of August.

The Bueu International Short Film Festival, FICBUEU, was established in 2008 as a platform for promoting the art of short film. FICBUEU includes, among other accompanying activities, film-themed tapas routes.

The festival and the short film festival thus differ in their timing and content: the first weekend of August is specified for SonRías Baixas, while FICBUEU is associated with promoting the art of short film and film-themed tapas routes.

Octopus and Local Festivals

The Festa do Polbo de Bueu was established in 1999. Its aim was to promote octopus as one of the town’s most important products.

At the Festa do Polbo, octopus is prepared, among other ways, as polbo á feira. Other preparations include empanada, caldeirada, pizza and wok.

The preparation methods mentioned range from polbo á feira through empanada and caldeirada to pizza and wok. They form part of the description of the Festa do Polbo and are associated with octopus as the product highlighted there.
