Culture and History
If you are interested in early settlement traces in Lantaño, you will encounter the Castro de Rial, an Iron Age hillfort. Its distinctive fortification consists of a single ring wall and natural embankment defences, which determine the appearance of the site.
For the chronological classification of Lantaño, a Neolithic burial mound in the area of the Castro de Rial is cited as evidence that Lantaño had already been settled since the Neolithic period. This early dating is therefore directly connected with this site.
At the Pazo Torre de Penelas, two buildings form a complex connected by a tower. At the same time, the pazo is listed as historical cultural heritage, bringing together architectural unity and heritage status at this site.
In the winery of the Pazo Torre de Penelas, egg-shaped containers made of Galician granite are used for both wine phases—the vinification and the ageing of the wines. The material and the distinctive shape are therefore among the stated features of winemaking at this pazo.
The Iglesia de San Pedro originated in the 12th or 13th century and received its present Baroque redesign in 1693. The Capela de Santo Domingo was built in the 17th century and complements this sequence of historic religious buildings.
The Cruceiro do Culebrón is home to the largest wayside cross in the municipality. The snake- or lizard-like figure on its shaft represents the devil in original sin, giving the monument a distinctive figurative meaning in addition to its size.
Traditions
The Capela de San Bieito dates from 1675 and was remodelled later. Its building history thus combines a specific year with a later intervention in the chapel.
If you would like to mark Lantaño’s religious dates in your calendar: the pilgrimage in honour of San Bieito takes place every year on 21 March and 11 July. Both dates are part of this place’s recurring festival calendar.
During the San Bieito celebrations, you can eat the traditional dish of octopus around the chapel. The dish is explicitly associated with these festivities and the area around the chapel.
During the San Bieito celebrations, an auction of roosters, considered to have been handed down in its original form, also takes place around the chapel. This event, too, is tied to the festivities and their location.
The municipality’s festival calendar lists the San Pedro festival in Lantaño for 29 June. Alongside San Bieito, the calendar therefore names another specific date for a festival in Lantaño.
Nature and Activities
Praia Fluvial da Areeira is a bathing and leisure area on the Umia River. Here, the river forms the explicitly named setting for the bathing area and the leisure activities located there.
At Praia Fluvial da Areeira, members of the Portas Civil Protection service organised free activities with canoes, kayaks and pedal boats.
The Roteiro do Monte de Lantaño follows the boundary and old paths of Lantaño’s communally used upland. Its route therefore includes both the boundary line and the historic paths through this communally used upland.
