Eidián – Romanesque, Pazo and Hiking Trails

In the Lugar de Eidián stands the Pazo de Eidián, a typical Galician noble residence from the 16th century. The pazo was built on an old Templar settlement. A chapel from this former Templar settlement has been preserved in the village of Eidián. The pazo was the ancestral seat of the López de Basadre family. The coat of arms of the López de Basadre family is located above the entrance gate of the Pazo de Eidián. The Pazo de Eidián is currently a tourist establishment offering dining and accommodation.

The pazo thus brings together several clearly defined historical references: its place within 16th-century Galician noble culture, the older settlement site and the later family history. Culture

The Iglesia de Santiago de Eidián is a typical example of rural Galician Romanesque architecture. It has a single-nave floor plan and a straight-ended chancel. A bell tower was added to the church on its main façade. The Iglesia de Santiago de Eidián also preserves zoomorphic and sloping corbels from the original construction.

The church thus combines the features of its original Romanesque design with a later addition to the main façade. The single-nave floor plan and straight-ended chancel define the basic form of the religious building; the preserved corbels, by contrast, are details of the original construction. Their zoomorphic design complements the sloping stones with another distinctive architectural element.

Amanca is a named megalithic archaeological site in Eidián. Eidián is one of the places in Agolada where significant barrow fields can be found.

With Amanca and the barrow fields, the documented local history extends beyond the later buildings. The megalithic site represents an archaeological connection within Eidián, while its inclusion among the corresponding places in Agolada defines the geographical context of these prehistoric traces.

The Ulla River irrigates the fields and meadows of Eidián. Several hiking trails run through natural landscapes around the Pazo de Eidián. These natural landscapes are shaped by the Ulla and Arnego rivers.
