Arbo: Pesqueiras, Trails along the Miño and the Lamprey Tradition

In Arbo, the pesqueiras are constructions of architectural and ethnographic significance. They continue to be used to catch river lamprey with a traditional, artisanal, sustainable and environmentally friendly technique, and are part of the culture, traditions and way of life of the people living in Arbo.

Culture

The Ruta de la Lamprea begins at the entrance to Playa Fluvial de Sela and leads, with the help of information panels, to the emblematic pesqueiras on the Miño. The Ruta de la Lamprea's second stop is the Centro de Interpretación del Vino y la Lamprea “ARABO”.

Nature

The Sendero Miño-Deva begins in Estación, in the parish of Arbo. From a viewpoint there, you can see the Miño, the mouth of the Deva where it meets the Miño, the pesqueiras, the International Bridge, Estación river beach and Portugal.

The Sendeiro dos Pescadores is more than 10 kilometres long and runs along the Miño as well as along paths used by fishermen to reach the pesqueiras. The Sendeiro dos Pescadores is included in the Natura 2000 network.

Hiking

The Ruta da Moura comprises a 9.5-kilometre circular route and a 1.5-kilometre out-and-back branch.

The Ruta da Moura passes through the abandoned village of Trabazos; its ruins are considered a historic element of the route. It also leads to the settlement of Sande, which lies among vineyards; from there, the route offers views of Portugal.

History

The Romanesque bridge of San Xoán de Mourentán is historically associated with a battle against French troops in February 1809 during the Spanish War of Independence.

In 1957, several scenes from the film “Orgullo y pasión” were shot in the rapids of the Miño in the municipality of Arbo.

Recreation

The San Antonio recreational area covers 3,000 m² and has a children's playground, an outdoor fitness area, a raised bridge over the pond, as well as tables and benches. Ducks usually live in the pond.

Festivals and Wine

The wines of Arbo belong to the D.O. Rías Baixas designation of origin.

The Festa da Lamprea Seca takes place on the second weekend of August in the traditional Carballeira de Turbela. It combines tastings of dried river lamprey prepared in various ways with D.O. Rías Baixas wines, a handicrafts and antiques market, and cultural activities.

The Romeira de San Fins takes place on 1 August on Mount San Fins. Believers from the Concello de Arbo and the neighbouring municipalities make a pilgrimage there for a day of festivities.
