Codeseda: Churches, Waterfalls and Hiking Trails

The Church of San Xurxo de Codeseda has a pentagonal apse and a rib-vaulted chancel. Its straight section is covered by a barrel vault; the capitals feature plant-based decoration influenced by Santiago de Compostela.

Hiking

The 30.30-kilometre circular trail PR-G 197 runs mainly through the parishes of San Xurxo de Codeseda and San Lourenzo de Sabucedo in the municipality of A Estrada. Along the route are river areas with native woodlands as well as mid-mountain landscapes. These landscapes provide a habitat for the wild horses that take part in the Rapa das Bestas in Sabucedo.

The PR-G 197 can be divided into two stages of 13 and 17 kilometres. There is also a variant that starts at A Grela and descends to Codeseda.

On the Camino de Santiago de la Geira Romana y de los Arrieros, 32 kilometres lie within the municipality of A Estrada. The final two stages lead to Codeseda and the town of A Estrada, where all services are available.

Nature

The Fervenza de Insuela is located in the parish of Codeseda and comprises a waterfall followed downstream by further waterfalls.

At the Fervenza das Quintas, the river drops around 100 metres over a section approximately 400 metres long, forming a series of small waterfalls.

The Umia River crosses the parish of Codeseda for approximately 6 kilometres.

Monte Gesteiras is a mountain in the wider area surrounding Codeseda. Monte Acibal is also a mountain in this wider regional area.

The wider area surrounding Codeseda also includes the viewpoints Mirador do Monte Lobeira and Mirador Faro das Luas.

Culture

Dispara Xestión Cultural is a museum in the vicinity of Codeseda. The Igrexa de San Paio, a church, is also located in the vicinity of Codeseda. The Iglesia de Santa María de Aguiones is likewise a church in the vicinity of Codeseda.

The Pazo de Maindo is a palace in the wider area surrounding Codeseda.

The Cruceiro da Feira in Codeseda dates from the late 18th century.

History

In 1124, King Alfonso VII transferred Codeseda to Munio Pérez Tacón. Thirty years later, the same church appears in a record by Pope Anastasius IV as a convent for nuns.

At present, 42 groups of mills have been identified in connection with Codeseda; many of them are in ruins. Three of these groups are already located in the territory of the parish of Sabucedo, at its boundary, but belong to the residents of Vilaboa.
