Aldán on the Ría – Holiday apartment in Galicia
Aldán has its own ría, protected by the headlands of Udra and Punta Couso. The town preserves the character of a seafaring village. Houses in the old fishing village centre stand alongside centuries-old hórreos, thereby connecting the maritime history of the town with a distinctive rural architectural form.
Water and paths
A Ponte is a stone bridge of medieval origin. It crosses the Orxás River shortly before its mouth. The structure is therefore one of the historic points where the course of the river and the older route directly converge.
The Ponte de San Cibrán lies on the old road towards Pontevedra. Its location points to an earlier connection from the town area towards the city. Together with A Ponte, it shows two different historical route connections: one on the Orxás River shortly before its mouth, and the other on the old road to Pontevedra.
Along the Orxás River, the Ruta dos Muíños runs from the town of Sobreira to the Bosque Encantado. The route therefore follows a clearly named section of the river and connects Sobreira with the grounds of the Finca de O Frendoal. The name Ruta dos Muíños also refers to the mill route as an independent component of the local landscape.
The Finca de O Frendoal is known by the name El Bosque Encantado. It was restored and prepared so that locals and tourists could admire it. The historic site thus appears both under its proper name and under the name associated with the grounds of the Bosque Encantado.
Architectural history and cultural heritage
The present-day Igrexa de San Cibrán de Aldán dates from 1866. It was built over an older church, meaning that the present structure is based on an earlier religious building. In the municipality of Cangas, the church is considered the finest example of neoclassical art. Its year of construction, predecessor building and art-historical classification are therefore part of its distinctive history.
The Pazo Torre de Aldán is also connected with the history of the town. The pazo is privately owned and cannot be visited in the centre of Aldán. This restriction expressly concerns visits in the town centre and describes the conditions applicable there for viewing the building.
From Cangas, the Pazo Torre de Aldán can be reached in the direction of Bueu via the PO-315 road, 6 km away in the centre of Aldán. This route information specifies the starting point of Cangas, the direction of Bueu, the PO-315 road and the distance of 6 km to the centre of Aldán.
Festival tradition
The Galician festivals of tourist interest include the Danzas Ancestrais de San Sebastián. They are celebrated on 20 January. The festival tradition is therefore tied to a specific date and complements Aldán’s architectural history, old routes and maritime character with an annual cultural event.
