Flix on the Ebro: Nature, Culture and History

In Flix, the central part of the meander is designated as the Reserva Natural de Fauna Salvatge. A viewpoint at the highest section of the road surrounding it can be reached from the C-233, the road to Bovera, from kilometre 1 onward, or via the ferry crossing.

Nature

The Sebes Nature Reserve covers more than 250 hectares of protected habitats, home to birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and special plant species. It is a mosaic of wetlands, riparian forests and river islands in the heart of the Ebro.

The main route through the Sebes Nature Reserve is approximately 3.5 kilometres long and leads from Mas del Director to the Mirador de les Illes in the meander of Riba-roja d’Ebre.

The Sebes Nature Reserve offers routes for walking or cycling, birdwatching from observation points, scheduled activities, family programmes and opportunities to participate in environmental volunteering.

Culture and History

The Refugi Antiaeri de Flix was renovated and converted into a museum in 2008 and can be visited as part of guided tours.

Guided tours of Flix’s cultural heritage must be reserved at least 48 hours in advance.

Castell Nou was built in 1874 on the highest hill of the meander to protect the centuries-old upper ferry crossing.

The Sebes archaeological site comprises three settlement areas: an Early Iron Age settlement on the highest part of the hill, a necropolis from the same period and an Iberian settlement from the second half of the 6th and the 5th centuries BC.

The Centre d'Interpretació del Camí de Sirga in Flix preserves the memory of the Sirgadors and Llaguters, who used towlines on the Ebro to pull llaguts and their cargo upstream.

The Centre d'Interpretació del Camí de Sirga has a nature classroom where students can take part in activities on the historical and natural heritage, research projects and environmental workshops.

The Colònia Industrial next to the Flix factory is characterised by architecture and urban planning with a strong German influence.

The Refugi dels pontoners is associated with Republican pontoon engineers who sought protection in air-raid shelters built during the Battle of the Ebro after German and Italian aircraft attacked the river crossings.

River and crossings

Flix is home to one of the last remaining ferry crossings on the Ebro. The Pas de barca de Flix ferry service is free of charge. It uses two larger llaguts, the Democràcia and the Mare de Déu de l’Assumpció, and can transport several vehicles and pedestrians at the same time.
