Nature and Trails

Capçanes is part of the protected natural area Espai Natural de la Serra de Llaberia. Rugged formations, caves and viewpoints define its landscape, which is also home to rich biodiversity. The landscape, trails and cultural traces offer different ways to plan your day.

A network of hiking trails leads through ravines, dry-stone walls, cliffs and Mediterranean forests and includes routes ranging from family hikes to ascents. The route Siguiendo los pasos del guerrillero Carrasclet begins in Capçanes and is signposted as PR-C 91. It leads to the Forat de la Roca de Llaberia, a viewpoint overlooking the agricultural plain and the surrounding mountain ranges. On this route, you can approach the Olla del Gegant in the Barranc del Tortó to see a waterfall more than 15 metres high, cut into the rock.

The Barranc del Tortó climbing area is located on the Cingles del Tortó, which belong to the EIN Serra de Llaberia. The different types of terrain and the alternation between hiking, climbing and the climbing area help you organise activities according to your preferred daily rhythm.

East of the town centre lies the Les Taules area. Dry-stone walls, huts, shelters, livestock sheds, cisterns, apiaries, stone heaps, protective shelters and a lime kiln are concentrated there within a small area.

Culture and History

The Monument al Carrasclet commemorates the guerrilla fighter Pere Joan Barceló i Anguera (1687–1741), who was also known by the name Carrasclet. The BTT route Pedaleando en tierras del guerrillero Carrasclet leads into the Barranco de la Vall as far as La Fou and returns via Mas de la Vall and de Calàs.

Celler de Capçanes was founded in 1933 by several courageous families. It offers a guided tasting of four Garnatxa wines grown on four different soils typical of Montsant: Panal, Argila, Calissa and Llicorella. Capçanes railway station is opposite Celler de Capçanes.

Wine and Local Traditions

Every year, Celler de Capçanes organises Nit de les Garnatxes as part of the events surrounding Fira del Vi. The programme includes tastings of four Garnatxa wines, tapas from various restaurants, music and live performances. For several years, the Associació de Dones de Capçanes has organised a competition for Truita amb suc, a dish considered typical of the region.

Annual Festivals

The Festa Major takes place on the last weekend in July in honour of Sant Abdó and Sant Senén; it is a festival celebrated mainly in the streets. In December, the Fira d'Artesania i Productes locals de Capçanes also takes place, with market stalls filling the Plaça de l'Església and the town's streets.
