Discover Cornudella de Montsant

Cornudella de Montsant lies in the upper valley of the Siurana River between the Montsant Massif and the Prades Mountains. A circular route passes Sant Joan del Codolar, Grau de Montsant, Cova Santa, Roca Corbatera, Grau Gran and Camí de la Llisera.

Nature and trails

Coll d’Albarca is a starting point for many excursions. The Montsant 360º route runs through the municipal area of Cornudella de Montsant. The climbing sectors and routes in Montsant are concentrated, among other places, around Cornudella de Montsant. The Grau dels Tres Esglaons ascent in Montsant includes sections with technical aids for overcoming the vertical passages. Roca de les Hores above the Ermita de Sant Joan del Codolar is considered a climbing area suitable for summer climbing. Activities such as canoeing and kayaking are possible at the Siurana Reservoir.

Culture and history

The Ermita de Sant Joan del Codolar lies on the southern slopes of the Serra de Montsant, at the upper end of the Sant Joan stream. It was built by Carthusian monks at the end of the 15th century. The present building of the Ermita de Sant Joan del Codolar dates largely from 1780. The Església Parroquial de Santa Maria in Cornudella de Montsant is a Renaissance building by Pere Blai. The Abric de Gallicant is protected as an archaeological site designated a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (BCIN) and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since December 1998.

The Celler Cooperatiu de Cornudella is a modernist winery built in 1919 that is still in operation. In 2002, the Celler Cooperatiu de Cornudella de Montsant was recognised as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional in the category of historic monument. The Celler Cooperatiu produces and markets olive oil and wine. The Arxiu Morató Aragonès houses paintings, drawings, graphic works and documentary material from the personal archive of Josep Maria Morató Aragonès. The Museu Peris-Aragonès is a private collection of objects brought by its owners from various parts of the world.

Festivals and events

The Fira d’Artesania i Jornada Gastronòmica takes place on a Sunday in May at Plaça dels Cellers in Cornudella de Montsant. The Festa Major takes place on the third weekend in August and includes an opening ceremony, dances, Gegants, habaneras and sports finals.

Opening hours and getting there

The Arxiu Morató Aragonès is open on the first Sunday of every month from 10:00 to 14:00 without prior booking; visits are possible at weekends by appointment. To visit the Museu Peris-Aragonès, an appointment must be made with the Cornudella Tourist Office. The Cornudella Tourist Office is located at the entrance to the town, near the Celler Cooperatiu. Cornudella de Montsant can be reached from Falset via the N-420, TP-7401, TP-7402 and C-242, from Reus via the N-420 and C-242, and from La Granadella via the C-242.
