Capafonts – Nature, History and Holiday Apartments

Capafonts lies between the Muntanyes de Prades and Els Motllats in the upper reaches of the Brugent River. As it leaves the valley, the Brugent has carved out the Les Fous del Brugent gorges. The Camí de Farena runs through Les Fous, a natural route between La Riba and Capafonts.

Nature

La cova de les Gralles is a large rock overhang cave at the bottom of the Barranc de la Font Nova, above the Font de la Llúdriga. It was formed by headward erosion, is about 15 metres deep, and above it is a waterfall or rock drop approximately 60 metres high.

Below the Font Nova lies Pont de Joi, a natural arch. La Roca Foradada is a natural arch formed by erosion in a rock wall approximately 10 metres high. Els Motllats is a karst mountain range in the municipalities of Capafonts, Vilaplana and Mont-ral, with caves, shafts, natural arches and deep gorges. The Font de la Llúdriga never runs dry and supplies Capafonts with water.

History and Local Culture

The parish church of Santa Maria is a three-nave building completed towards the end of the 18th century in a simple Baroque style. Capafonts’ medieval bread oven dates from the 13th century and is considered one of the town’s most important buildings.

Finds in the Cova del Daniel provide evidence of human presence in the Capafonts valley during the Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic periods. The Ermita de la Mare de Déu de Barrulles is a medieval chapel built in the 12th century and first mentioned in a document in 1225.

The Festa Popular del Mandongo de Capafonts takes place on the first Sunday in February and revives the traditional preparation of pork during the slaughter.

Trails and Visits

The centre of Capafonts is small and can be explored on foot; several marked hiking trails start there. The route “Del Riu Brugent al Cim de les Muntanyes de Prades” begins in Capafonts, follows the Brugent and leads to the Ermita de Barrulles.

Towards the end of spring, a pilgrimage celebration is held at the Ermita de Barrulles. Tourist visits are offered by prior reservation and include the church, the medieval bread oven, the old washhouses and other defining sites in the town. The Forn de pa de Capafonts can be visited as part of a guided tour of the town centre by prior reservation.
