Vall-llobrega – Churches, Trails and Wine
The earliest traces of human settlement in Vall-llobrega are located at Els Vilars. They date from Roman times. The remains of a Roman villa are located at the Vilarenys archaeological site. The villa dates back to the 1st century. It was inhabited until the 6th century. Ovens, graves and wall remains were also discovered there.
Culture and History
The Església vella de Sant Mateu stands in a location whose surroundings formerly contained the original settlement core of Vall-llobrega. It is a Romanesque building. It probably dates from the 10th or 11th century.
The Església de Sant Mateu in Raval de Baix is a 17th-century church. It has a single-nave layout. It has two side chapels. Its apse is polygonal. The building permit for the Església de Sant Mateu was issued on 30 January 1669. Permission to consecrate the new church was granted on 21 January 1671. The church has a simple 17th-century baptismal font.
Raval de Baix is home to houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. They line up lengthwise along one side of the path. The Eucaliptol de la Plaça de la Vila is more than 100 years old. It is considered one of the characteristic landmarks of Plaça de la Vila in Vall-llobrega. It was planted by the children of the former school of the municipality of Vall-llobrega.
Landscape and Trails
Vall-llobrega lies at the foot of the Massís de les Gavarres. Several access routes lead to this landscape area. The Descobrint Montagut route passes by the Dolmen de Montagut or includes this dolmen as a point of interest. The Descobrint Montagut route leads to a summit of the Massís de les Gavarres. This summit is Montagut. The route offers views of Palamós.
Route 10 from Vall-llobrega begins at the car park opposite the town hall. The starting point is opposite the town hall. Route 22 from Vall-llobrega is signposted with information signs. Its signage includes painted markings for the local SL hiking trail. The markings are white and green.
