History

The current appearance of Castell d’Hostalric is shaped by the French siege that began in 1809 and by the occupation of the fortress on 13 May 1810 after a five-month siege. At Castell d’Hostalric, you can take a self-guided tour of the guardroom, bastions, powder magazine and bomb-proof gallery; audiovisual content and an interactive model are available to support the tour. The guided tour of Castell d’Hostalric lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and explains the development from the medieval castle of the Viscounts of Cabrera to the modern fortress. During a visit to Hostalric’s medieval town area with the town key, you can walk along the ramparts at your own pace, climb to the highest point of Torre dels Frares and enjoy the view from Torre d’Ararà. The architectural elements reveal different aspects of the site: the bastions, powder magazine and bomb-proof gallery belong to the fortress, while the ramparts and towers define the medieval town area. In this way, the tour combines the military development of Castell d’Hostalric with the surviving parts of the fortified town.

The section of the Tourdera in Hostalric is 6.1 kilometres long; 0.6 kilometres of this consists of the branch at the Riera d’Arbúcies and 5.5 kilometres of the main route along the Tordera River. Every year over the Easter weekend, Hostalric holds the Festa Medieval, featuring a large medieval market, costumed characters and period activities.
