Palol d'Onyar: Trails, History and Catalan Culture
Culture and History
The Castell de Palol d'Onyar is classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN). The Església de Sant Sadurní de Palol is attached to the Castell de Palol. The present-day building of the Església de Sant Sadurní de Palol was created through a reconstruction between the 16th and 17th centuries. Its architectural details include a Renaissance portal that defines the church's entrance. Thus, the castle and the attached church bring together a protected cultural status, a structural connection and several historical periods in close proximity.
At the beginning of the 18th century, ceramic panels were installed in the del Roser chapel of the Església de Sant Sadurní de Palol. Their depictions include, among other things, miracles and the siege of Girona by the French soldiers of the Duke of Noailles in 1710 and 1711. Religious motifs therefore stand alongside the depiction of a specifically dated event from Girona's history. The ceramic panels complement the church's architectural features with a visual layer from the early 18th century.
Trails and Landscape
The Espais literaris de Miquel Pairolí is a seven-kilometre route between Quart and Palol d'Onyar. It passes through places where Miquel Pairolí lived and observed the landscape. The route therefore connects Quart and Palol d'Onyar with the writer's biographical stations. At the same time, the observed landscape is directly part of the places through which this literary route runs. Its length, course and the aforementioned stages of his life define the character of this trail.
The Camí de l'església de Palol is regarded as a historic route in public use and begins within the built-up area of Palol d'Onyar. After 420 metres, it ends at the Castell de Palol. The route therefore leads from the built-up area to the structure that forms its endpoint. Part of the Camí de Can Marcó de Palol lies within the EIN de les Gavarres. Consequently, the course of this route extends into the area of the EIN de les Gavarres, while the Camí de l'església leads towards the castle.
Local Cuisine
Mesón Gascón in Palol d'Onyar specialises in suckling pig and kid goat cooked in a wood-fired oven. Both dishes are part of the local cuisine there and share the same wood-fired oven preparation. Thus, alongside the historic buildings and trails, a specific local culinary speciality is also at the centre of attention.
Festivals
The Festa Major de Palol d'Onyar is celebrated in the last week of July. Its date therefore falls at the end of July and adds a fixed event in the town's annual calendar to its cultural history, trails and local cuisine.
