Culture and history

Mas Castellar is an archaeological site with three superimposed settlements dating from between 450 and 180 BC. The superimposed settlements link the site to several chronologically classified settlement phases. Its historical significance therefore derives both from the number of settlements and from their dating over the period between 450 and 180 BC. The site is located on a slightly elevated terrace in an area between two nearby watersheds. Mas Castellar is approximately equidistant from the Greek colonial settlements of Emporion and Rhode.

To reach the site, the route begins in the centre of Pontós. It follows the GIV-5125 to its end, then turns left onto the GIP-5126. Approximately 340 metres after kilometre 3, turn right onto the road to Mas Castellar. The route is thus marked by several successive landmarks: the town centre, the end of the GIV-5125, the turn onto the GIP-5126, and the road to Mas Castellar.

The remains of Pontós Castle are located on a 124-metre-high hill about 500 metres from the town centre. The castle site is situated in the present-day Castell district. The castle adds another historical testimony to the archaeological site within the municipality, with its location further defined by the Castell district and the height and distance mentioned above.

Landscape and nature

The natural surroundings of Pontós are characterised by pine, holm oak and oak forests, as well as cultivated areas. Forested areas and agricultural land therefore lie side by side and shape the landscape of the municipality.

On the Fluvià River, within the municipality of Pontós, there is an area belonging to the Natura 2000 network. Alongside the forests and cultivated areas, the river landscape is therefore another clearly identified component of Pontós’ natural surroundings.

The Torre de l’Àngel stands as a telegraph tower on a hill at an elevation of 146 metres. It is located approximately 500 metres north of Pontós. Alongside the castle, the tower adds another structure in an elevated location; its northern position and approximate distance place it within the surroundings of the town.

Routes and ecclesiastical heritage

The Camí de Sant Jaume passes through Pontós on the route from Figueres to Bàscara. The town is thus part of a named section between these two cities. The church of Sant Martí de Pontós contains a Gothic baptismal font.

The Ermita de Santa Anna is distinguished by a large atrium, or galilea, in front of the entrance. This porch includes a large round arch. The entrance ensemble is therefore defined by the porch and its distinctive architectural element.

Festivals in Pontós

The Sunday morning programme of the Festa Major de Sant Martí includes a sung service in the church of Sant Martí, accompanied by an orchestra. Pontós celebrates the summer Festa Major de Santa Anna in July. The festival details therefore specify both a particular Sunday morning programme item and the month of the summer festival.
