Castelló D’empúries between the Middle Ages and nature

Castelló d'Empúries is included in cultural heritage route number 7, “El Comtat d'Empúries I: les antigues capitals”. The medieval complex Cúria i Presó was built from 1336 onwards on Puig Mercadal and preserves architectural remains of the former count's castle of Castelló d'Empúries.

Culture

The Museu d'Història Medieval de la Cúria-Presó is part of the cultural heritage. It is part of the cultural and tourist route Ruta del Pirineu Comtal. The Ecomuseu Farinera adds another side of the town's history: the facility is located in an early-20th-century mill that was converted into a museum. The machinery used to process wheat into flour has been preserved on site. Current opening hours for historical museums and buildings should be checked before visiting.

The Ecomuseu Farinera also preserves the Rec del Molí, a medieval water channel that begins at the weir in Vilanova de la Muga. Industrial technology, historical work processes and a water-engineering relic thus come together. The Basílica de Santa Maria is a Gothic church dating from the 12th to the 15th century. Construction of the Gothic Santa Maria church in Castelló d'Empúries began in 1261 and continued well into the 15th century. On 4 April 2006, Pope Benedict XVI elevated Santa Maria de Castelló d'Empúries to the status of a minor basilica.

Historical reenactment is also at the heart of Terra de Trobadors, a recurring cultural festival in Castelló d'Empúries. The 34th edition is scheduled for 11, 12 and 13 September 2026. The programme for Terra de Trobadors 2026 includes historical reenactments, music, theatre, a medieval market, family activities and conferences in the streets and historic areas of Castelló d'Empúries. For a festival, the scheduled event dates and times should be checked again before travelling.

Castillo de Perelada, a castle, is located in the surroundings of Castelló d'Empúries. The Museu de la Ciutadella de Roses, the Museu de la Tècnica de l'Empordà and the Museu Del Joguet De Catalunya are also located nearby; all three are museums.

Nature

The Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà is located mostly within the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries and coincides with the remains of the former lake of Castelló. The Butterfly Park Empuriabrava, a zoo, is located nearby. Platja d'Empuriabrava, a beach, is also located nearby. Platja de la Rovina is a beach in the surroundings of Castelló d'Empúries, as is Platja del Salatar.
