Discover Montagut: Alta Garrotxa and Village History

Montagut combines the protected natural landscape of Alta Garrotxa with the Mare de Déu del Cós viewpoint, historic traces and trails through the landscape. A large part of the municipality of Montagut i Oix lies at the heart of this protected natural landscape. The present-day Mare de Déu del Cós sanctuary offers views over the mountains of Alta Garrotxa and the river plain. From Cós, both the mountain ranges and the plain are therefore visible at once. The protected natural landscape provides the geographical setting for Montagut’s trails and historic traces.

Landscape, views and protected caves

The Volta circular al Cós circular hike offers views over the plain of Montagut. At Cós, the view also takes in the mountains of Alta Garrotxa and the river plain. Those who choose this trail have a circular route ahead of them, with the viewpoint as a fixed reference point.

Baumes de Caxurma is a group of caves in sedimentary materials; the largest cave extends for approximately 400 metres. Access to Baumes de Caxurma is prohibited because it is an especially sensitive habitat. The caves therefore remain a protected habitat rather than an accessible interior space.

Trails through fields and cycling connections

The Camí de Montagut runs through wheat fields, offers beautiful views and has Alta Garrotxa as its backdrop. The wheat fields form the immediate surroundings of the route, while Alta Garrotxa remains visible in the background as a mountain panorama. For a walk through the landscape, this route combines open fields with mountain views.

The Camí de Montagut crosses the village to the G49 Montagut signpost, passes the municipal swimming pool and continues to the cycle path to the La Cometa development. The Ruta la Devesa i les baumes de Caxurma also passes the municipal swimming pool and reaches a cycle path shortly afterwards. On the Camí, the cycle path leads to the La Cometa development; on the Ruta, a cycle path is reached shortly afterwards. The G49 Montagut signpost and the municipal swimming pool are specific points between the village and the onward route on the Camí; the municipal swimming pool is also along the Ruta. When planning your day, you can treat the expansive view at Cós and the fields with their mountain backdrop along the Camí as different focal points.

Sant Pere de Montagut: Romanesque origins

Montagut bears evidence of its architectural and local history. The Mare de Déu del Cós is now a sanctuary and was formerly the chapel of Montagut Castle. The remains of Castell de Montagut include the base of a medieval tower and more recent walls. The base is medieval, while the walls are more recent.

Sant Pere de Montagut is a church of Romanesque origin in Montagut. Its bell tower is visible from several points in the village. Sant Pere de Montagut is integrated into the village fabric and connects cultural heritage with everyday life.
