Discover Beuda: Churches, Castles and Hiking Trails

In the centre of Beuda’s small village core stands the parish church of Sant Feliu de Beuda. Together with the churches in Segueró, the monastery of Palera and the medieval complexes, it reflects a local history that connects sacred buildings with fortified places.

Culture

The church of Santa Maria de Segueró dates from the 12th century. Inside, there is a polychrome alabaster depiction of the Virgin and Child from the 14th century. Thus, the church’s construction period and a work of art created significantly later come together at this site.

The Sant Sepulcre de Palera was consecrated in 1085 by Berenguer Guifré, the Bishop of Girona. It is an 11th-century Romanesque monastery in the woods of Palera. A road branching off to the right between Besalú and Beuda leads there. Its consecration by the Bishop of Girona is just as much a part of the site’s history as its location in the woods and its Romanesque classification.

The Priory of Palera enjoyed the same privileges as visitors to the Holy Land; as a result, it became a much-visited place of worship and pilgrimage. This connection explains the priory’s particular historical significance alongside its architectural character.

The round tower of El Castellot de Beuda is one of the oldest surviving towers in La Garrotxa. The El Castellot de Beuda route leads to a medieval castle on a hill above Beuda. The tower and the castle therefore represent different aspects of the same historic landscape: the former is characterised by its age and preserved form, while the latter is defined by its location on the hill.

Hiking

The long-distance GR2 hiking trail crosses the municipality of Beuda diagonally from southwest to northeast, passing through the hamlets of Palera, Beuda and Segueró. Its route therefore connects several parts of the municipality.

Every year, as part of the Festa de Sant Sebastià, the municipality of Beuda organises the Ruta de la Feixina. This popular hike of moderate difficulty usually takes four to five hours. Its stated duration makes it a standalone programme item within the event schedule.

The El Castell de Falgars route leads to the remains of Castellot de Falgars on Puig del Far, a hill more than 900 metres high. In addition to the route to Castellot de Beuda, there is therefore another route whose destination is connected with a historic fortification.

Nature

The natural area of Beuda consists of mixed forests of holm oaks, oaks and pines. Beuda’s natural environment is shaped by the most significant gypsum outcrop in the Pyrenees. Forested areas and the geologically distinctive gypsum outcrop are the two specifically named landscape features of the municipality.

Festivals

The Castanyada de Beuda takes place at the end of October in the village of Beuda.

The Festa de Sant Feliu de Beuda takes place on the first weekend of August.

The Festa de Sant Pere de Lligordà takes place at the end of June.

The Festa de Santa Maria de Segueró takes place on 14 and 15 August. The festivals mentioned are therefore spread across the end of June, the first weekend of August, 14 August and the end of October, and involve several parts of the municipality.

Roads

The GIV-5234 provides direct access from Besalú to the hamlets of Lligordà and Palera, as well as to the centre of Beuda. The road therefore represents a connection that includes both hamlets and the centre of the municipality.
