Culture and History

The architectural heritage of Vilassar de Mar includes an ensemble of modernist villas on Carrer Cristòfor Colom and the parish church of Sant Joan Baptista. Torre d'en Nadal was built in 1551 by the Sala family next to their farmhouse. Can Bisa is an Indian-returnee tower from the late 19th century and now belongs to the municipality of Vilassar de Mar.

The local collection of the Museu de la Marina specialises in history and ethnography and conveys the origins and a large part of the history of Vilassar de Mar. The Museu de la Marina displays various fishing techniques and nautical instruments; its signal flags at sea are also part of the exhibition, which provides information about transatlantic shipping. The exhibition on the Roman necropolis of Vilassar de Mar is based on the excavation of around sixty graves discovered in 1999.

Art and Houses

The permanent exhibition “Enric Monjo, escultor” at the Museu Enric Monjo traces the life and work of the sculptor Enric Monjo (1895–1976) through his years of training, his Noucentista period and his professional work. The Casa Museu Carme Rovira presents the private surroundings of the naïve painter Carme Rovira, as well as a selection of her works. In addition, the house’s murals have been restored to recreate its appearance during the painter’s lifetime.

Scheduled visits to the Casa Museu Carme Rovira have been suspended until further notice due to structural damage identified in the building. The Gliptoteca Enric Monjo specialises in art and includes sculpture collections by Enric Monjo, paintings by Carme Rovira and Maria Ferrés, and municipal art.

The cultural sites range from buildings and local history to sculpture, painting, archaeology and maritime heritage. This spectrum is complemented by the town’s flower-growing tradition and its market for flowers and ornamental plants.

Beach and Trails

Platja de l’Almadrava has an adapted bathing area for people with reduced mobility. During the bathing season, information on beach conditions and safety notices is available for the beaches of Vilassar de Mar; data on the microbiological quality of the bathing water is also provided every two weeks.

The Via Marina of the Camí de Sant Jaume passes through Vilassar de Mar. The Route of the Americans is a free, self-guided route through the Indian heritage of Vilassar de Mar. A hybrid route through the centre of Maresme connects Vilassar de Mar and Sant Pol de Mar via coastal and mountain sections.
