History

The archaeological site Jaciment de La Verna was inhabited during the late Iberian period and throughout the Roman period, from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. The Jaciment de La Verna includes the remains of a wine cellar and a fermentation vat. The Capella del Roser was blessed in 1579. The small building has a square floor plan and a rounded eastern end with a battered base; these features suggest that it may originally have been a defensive element.

The parish church Església parroquial de Sant Genís was built in the 18th century to replace the former Santa Maria parish. It has a single-nave, rectangular layout, a barrel vault with lunettes and four side chapels on each side. The Castell de Foix is a medieval Romanesque castle from the 11th century. The surviving wall remains of the Castell de Foix are visible from the access path; the castle is protected as BCIN. An approximately 40-metre-long and approximately 10-metre-high section of the wall of the Peguera manor house remains. El Rec is a waterworks system with above-ground canal sections, underground tunnels and at least two surviving aqueducts or bridges.

Festivals and Regional Traces

The Festa Major de Torrelles de Foix includes a Correfoc, a mass in honour of Sant Genís and a procession with local giant figures, devils, drummers, Panderetes, Gitanes and Grallers. It takes place on the weekend closest to 25 August. In the centre of Torrelles de Foix there is a craft exhibition that was revived in 1990.
