Súria: Castle, Mining History and Nature
The Castell de Súria has been documented since 992. A guided tour, “Descobrint el Passat”, takes visitors through the medieval Castell and the Poble Vell de Súria with an expert guide.
History and Mining
Those wishing to explore the mining history will find the starting point for tours of important sites in the mining history of Súria and the rest of the municipality at the interpretation centre of the Museu de la Mineria. The centre is located in the Cal Sivila del Lloc building, the Casinet, and is accessible via the Cal Balaguer del Porxo tourist office.
The Colònia Santa Maria was built from 1918 onwards by the Belgian Solvay group. It was intended as a workers’ settlement for the employees of the potash mine and their families.
Today, only small visible remains of the Portal de Manresa in Súria survive. The portal itself has been completely destroyed.
The Torre de Salipota was part of the Barcelona–Solsona optical telegraph line, which was used exclusively for military purposes. A tower in Súria dates from the 11th century. It served defensive and control functions and has a circular ground plan with an external diameter of 5.35 metres.
The historical heritage of Súria thus ranges from medieval structures to the industrial history of the 20th century. In addition to the Castell, the Poble Vell and the Torre de Salipota, the Colònia Santa Maria is also part of this heritage. Its history is linked to the potash mine, the Belgian Solvay group and the families employed there. The surviving traces of the Portal de Manresa also point to the former fortifications of the town.
