Discover Martorell: Bridges, Museums and Routes to Montserrat

At the Pont del Diable, Martorell combines two clearly dated construction phases: the bridge was built during Roman times around 10 BC, while construction of the Gothic Pont del Diable began in 1283 over the remains of the Roman bridge.

Culture and History

On the right bank of the Llobregat, La Vila de Martorell is home to the Pont del Diable as well as the remains of the Ermita and the Fossar de Sant Bartomeu. The site is located on Carrer de Sant Bartomeu opposite Passeig Quarter. The three elements can be visited freely; a guided tour of the Pont del Diable is also available by prior reservation.

With L’Enrajolada, Casa Museu Santacana, the historical trail continues into museum culture. The house was founded in 1876 and preserves a significant ceramics collection with tiles dating from the 14th century to the first third of the 20th century. L’Enrajolada can only be visited as part of a guided tour and by prior reservation.

The Muxart, Espai d’Art i Creació Contemporanis is dedicated to the permanent exhibition “Muxart. Color i Composició”. It features works by the painter Jaume Muxart, who was born in Martorell. During the centre’s usual opening hours, admission is free and no special registration is required; alternatively, the Muxart can be visited as part of a guided tour by prior reservation.

The Santa Margarida archaeological site also leads through several historical periods. It contains a Romanesque church from the late 12th century, built over the remains of an early Christian church from the 5th century. Another historical detail is revealed by the Sgraffiti Route: it leads to the city’s oldest preserved sgraffito, dating from 1821, at Plaça de la Vila 35. As a cultural route, the Sgraffiti Route conveys Martorell’s artistic identity and its distinctive architectural heritage.

Museums and Routes

The Via Métrica FGC Museum is located near the Martorell-Central stations of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya and ADIF. Historic railway vehicles are part of its exhibition. Admission is free by prior reservation.

The Way of Saint James through Martorell combines an urban and a natural route. It begins at the Pont del Diable and runs for 22.9 kilometres through Martorell, Abrera, Esparreguera and Collbató to Montserrat. The route is marked with tiles displaying the scallop-shell symbol of the Way of Saint James.

Nature and Landscape

The Parc Forestal de Can Cases has an approximately 2.5-kilometre orienteering course that follows well-signposted paths and trails. The park is recognised by the Generalitat as a forest of public utility with social and recreational value.

The Mirador de la Torre Griminella offers views over Martorell and the northern part of the comarca as far as Montserrat. Looking across the landscape, both Martorell and the wider regional surroundings, including Montserrat, are within view.

Events

Martorell also hosts a heritage festival. Its themes include the tradition and presentation of the legend of the Pont del Diable, literature, including the awarding of the Premi Vila de Martorell, and trade.
