Sant Pere de Torelló: Nature, Trails and Culture

Around 70 percent of the municipality of Sant Pere de Torelló consists of forests, woodland and pastureland. The mountain ranges located mostly within the municipality include Puigsacalm-Bellmunt-Milany; they form part of the Pla d’Espais d’Interès Natural, Catalonia’s PEIN.

Nature and landscape

Beech trees growing in the Fageda de la Grevolosa reach heights of more than 30 metres. Some of these beech trees are over 200 years old. The Fageda de la Grevolosa is located in the EIN Serres de Milany-Santa Magdalena i Puigsacalm-Bellmunt protected area.

The Fageda de la Grevolosa can be reached by road in the direction of Olot. From near the Bracons farmhouse, an approximately 15- to 20-minute walk leads there. In a wooded setting in the upper reaches of the Ges River, there is a waterfall about 15 metres high. An uphill footpath from La Vall leads to this waterfall.

The Santuari de Bellmunt offers one of the most extensive panoramas over the Osona comarca and southern Ripollès. The first documented mention of the Santuari de Bellmunt dates from 1219.

Culture and local history

A chapel stands at an altitude of 730 metres on the small summit and rocky ridge known as Serrat de Nespla. This chapel is about half an hour from the town of Sant Pere de Torelló and offers views of the Vic Plain.

The parish church of Sant Pere de Torelló was begun in 1727 and consecrated in 1764. Its redesign made it a neoclassical architectural monument. The Pont de La Riera is a Romanesque bridge that formed part of a transhumance route. Livestock was driven along this route to the fairs.

The Ruta de la Torneria presents an endangered craft through sculptures at various locations in the town. The Ruta de la Torneria is also an easy circular route that can be walked in Sant Pere de Torelló.

Trails and recreation area

The PR C-45 Sender de la Vall de Ges connects Torelló, Sant Vicenç de Torelló and Sant Pere de Torelló. Walking the trail takes just under six hours. Yellow-and-white PR markings indicate the route. Information boards accompany the signposting of the PR C-45 Sender de la Vall de Ges.

The freely accessible La Riera recreation area is a ten-minute walk from the town of Sant Pere de Torelló in the direction of La Vola. Tables are available in the La Riera recreation area.

Different starting points are indicated for the destinations mentioned: the path to the Fageda starts near the Bracons farmhouse, the uphill footpath to the waterfall starts from La Vall, and La Riera lies in the direction of La Vola from the town.
