Discover Santa Margarida de Montbui: Heritage and Nature

La Tossa de Montbui rises to 626 metres.

At its summit is a heritage complex dating from the 10th and 11th centuries, with the Church of Santa Maria de Gràcia and the remains of the castle; this complex includes a tower dating from the 10th century, which is rectangular, has rounded corners and formed part of a larger territorial castle complex.

Culture

The Church of Santa Maria de la Tossa is a 10th-century building whose documented history dates back to 987. Its reconstruction was consecrated in 1032.

The remains of the Iberian population can be found in the La Tossa massif.

In the historic town centre are the remains of a Roman rural villa with a hypocaust heating system.

The Palau dels Comptes de Plasencia is a palace protected as a cultural asset of national interest. It was the political and economic centre of the Counts of Plasencia and the Barons of Montbui.

Its history dates back to the 12th century; the palace represents almost 800 years of local heritage.

The Church of Santa Margarida is a Baroque building with Renaissance elements and a distinctive bell tower.

Inside are a rib-vaulted presbytery and the mausoleum of the Counts of Plasencia.

The Molí de dalt de Can Planell is a grain mill dating from the 18th to the 19th century. Its structure was reconstructed, and the mill was put back into operation for educational purposes.

The Molí de baix de Can Planell is a restored grain mill of medieval origin and is considered unique in Catalonia.

Nature

Part of the protected PEIN area of Serra de Miralles-Queralt lies within Santa Margarida de Montbui.

Badland formations cover a considerable part of Santa Margarida de Montbui; in the exposed limestone conglomerates, features including Fous, waterfalls, rock faces and caves have formed.

The Mirador del Salt de la Donzella offers views over the Conca d’Òdena.

On clear days, these views extend towards Cadí, Port del Comte, Pedraforca and Montserrat.

Visits

Since July 2023, an exhibition about Calliderma Atagensis has been on display at La Tossa.

The exhibition focuses on a sea star fossil from the Eocene, approximately 38 million years old, with a skeleton consisting of 580 parts.

Visits are possible by prior appointment and on Sundays from 12:00 to 14:00.

A guided tour of the Church of Santa Margarida is scheduled for 1 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month.

Getting there

Santa Margarida de Montbui can be reached via the A-2 and the Ronda Sud.

From the direction of Tarragona, the C-37 provides the fastest access.

Hispano Igualadina operates bus services from some surrounding towns to the municipality.
