Manlleu: Industrial Heritage, Festivals and Paths along the Ter

The Museu del Ter was founded in Manlleu in 2004. Its purpose is to promote the industrial and natural heritage of the middle Ter basin.

Can Sanglas is a former cotton spinning mill dating from 1841. It is located at the final section of Manlleu's industrial canal. The permanent exhibition “La fàbrica de riu” uses experimental machines to explain the historical transformation of cotton into yarn.

The Sala d’exposicions de Can Puget presents various exhibitions throughout the year. They promote local art and culture and showcase artistic projects from other regions.

History

The Canal Industrial de Manlleu is 1,900 metres long. Its average width is 6.5 metres and its depth is 2 metres. The upper section of the canal was built in 1841; the lower section was constructed from 1848 onwards.

The Dalt Vila district has preserved its medieval urban layout.

The Pont de Manlleu is also known as Pont de can Moles. Within the municipality of Manlleu, it is the only fully preserved element of medieval cultural heritage.

The first documentary reference to a church in Manlleu dedicated to Santa Maria dates from 906. Dalt Vila, the bridge and the early history of the church thus represent various surviving traces of the town's earlier development.

Festivals

Every year on 14 August, Manlleu celebrates the Festa del Serpent. It includes a night-time performance based on the legend of the serpent that travels through the town's streets in search of its diamond.

The festival includes a theatrical walk in the morning, as well as workshops and games for children in the afternoon.

At the 32nd edition of the Fira Porc i Cervesa in Manlleu, traditional tastings, pairings and gastronomic activities were offered in Dalt Vila.

Activities and Nature

“Mysterium Serpentis” comprises seven clue stations at important points around the town, from the landing stage to the Font de la Mare de Déu. When it was introduced, it was presented as a free escape-tour game that could be played at any time.

Manlleu's cycle network is connected to the Passeig del Ter and enables recreational rides throughout the town in natural surroundings. A route along the Canal Industrial de Manlleu and the Ter shows how water shaped Manlleu's industrial history. It offers insights into the flora and fauna of the river and canal, as well as the associated hydraulic installations.
