Discover Fonollosa: Torres de Fals and Historic Churches

In Fonollosa, the Torres de Fals visitor programme includes a guided exterior tour of the monumental complex and a visit to the musealised interior of the Sant Vicenç church, with an audiovisual presentation on Engonça’s will. Guided tours of Torres de Fals take place on the third Sunday of each month at 10:00 and 11:30; places are limited and advance booking is required.

Culture

The Torres de Fals monumental complex comprises the towers of the former castle of Fals, the Sant Vicenç de Fals church, its rectory and the cemetery. Two towers remain from the Torres de Fals defensive complex; one is 19 metres high and the other 17 metres. Santa Maria del Grau de Fals has a Romanesque nave built in the 12th century and a pre-Romanesque atrium. Next to Mas Grauet, Santa Maria del Grau de Fals stands on a small rise and offers views over the Fals plain.

The Sant Andreu de Comallonga chapel is located near Mas Sant Andreu in the north of the municipality of Fonollosa and borders Sant Mateu de Bages. Its construction shows several building and remodelling phases: the Gothic section defines the building, while only some fragments of walls remain from the earlier Romanesque construction. The present-day Santa Creu de Fonollosa church is an approximately Neoclassical new building, erected around the 17th century in place of an older, probably Romanesque temple that had been demolished.

Traditions

The Pessebre Vivent del Bages began in 1977 in Fals and is now held every Christmas with around sixteen performances and approximately 260 participants. At the Aplec del Grau in Fals, the traditional Ball de l’Almorratxa, together with the Ball de Cascavells and the Corrandes de Fals, followed by Sardana music, are featured.

Landscape

The Roques del Diable form an elevated limestone platform above the fields between the Torrent de Bacardit or Torrent de Camps and the Torrent de Fonollosa. The karst formation has numerous holes, marks and depressions, some of which resemble footprints, grimaces or feet. The route to the Roques del Diable is signposted, although the site is currently covered by vegetation, which limits visibility. The monumental holm oak Alzina centenària del Mas Querol in Fonollosa has been designated a monumental tree by the Generalitat de Catalunya and has a trunk circumference of 5.64 metres at the base.

Wine

By appointment, Celler Més que Paraules offers tours of the farmhouse, wine cellar and vineyards, as well as guided tastings led by an oenologist. At the Jaumandreu estate in Fonollosa, Celler Més que Paraules produces wines with the Denominació d’Origen Catalunya.

Trails

The Camí de les Tres Esglésies connects Fonollosa, Camps and the Torres de Fals via the Raval del Perejutge. Fonollosa offers signposted circular hiking and mountain biking routes on which the local roads and paths can be followed without difficulty.
