Cornellà de Llobregat combines historic buildings with unusual collections and a cultural offering ranging from mathematics to clown art.

The Festival Internacional de Pallassos de Cornellà brings together a selection of internationally renowned clown-art professionals.

The Palau Mercader in Cornellà de Llobregat is home to the Museu de Matemàtiques de Catalunya – MMACA. Covering more than 300 m², it offers hands-on, playful exhibitions and activities relating to mathematics. The permanent exhibition “Experiències matemàtiques” includes games, constructions and other elements. One section of the premises is dedicated to geometry. Mirrors make up another area of the exhibition. There are also sections on arithmetic and statistics. Combinatorics and strategy are likewise covered in dedicated rooms. Cartography is another component of the permanent exhibition.

The Museu Palau Mercader displays more than 3,000 objects. These objects formed the former “Museum of the Count of Bell·lloc”. The museum presents the way of life of an aristocratic family from the late 19th century. The exhibition also reveals the family’s cultural and artistic interests.

History

The Castell de Cornellà is a large Gothic manor house. It was built in several periods. It was also remodelled in several periods. The castle stands on a small hill. From there, it offers a good view of the lower course of the Llobregat. The castle contains an exhibition room. Cultural activities take place in its courtyard. Civic activities are also held there. Thus, the building comprises historic fabric, an exhibition room and a courtyard used for cultural and civic activities.

The Museu de les Aigües houses a true-to-scale reproduction of Antoni Gaudí’s vanished Cascada de la Casa Vicens. The reproduction is made at a scale of 1:1.

Park

The Parc de Can Mercader includes a lake. Its gardens feature pavilions. Viewpoints are also part of the gardens. Paths run through the park. Seating areas complement the grounds. There is also a swimming pool. The grounds were laid out on former cultivation terraces. At the Parc de Can Mercader, electric miniature trains run, which children and adults can ride.

Other destinations include Esplugues de Llobregat, Corbera de Llobregat, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Climent de Llobregat, Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Torrelles de Llobregat.

Visiting

The MMACA offers family workshops every Sunday. Advance registration is required for the workshops. On Sundays and public holidays, the Museu Palau Mercader offers self-guided visits. These visits take place from 11:00 to 13:00. The offer is available provided that no other incompatible activity is taking place there.
