Nature

The Bornova and the less water-rich La Vega River, along with several streams including the Arroyo de la Casa, the Regatillo and the Arroyo de la Ceja, flow through Villares de Jadraque. Ash and alder trees dominate the riverside vegetation. Trails starting from Villares de Jadraque connect the town’s river landscape with other regional routes.

The oak forests in the municipality of Villares de Jadraque provide a habitat for roe deer, wild boar, foxes and other mammals. Numerous bird species, including large birds of prey, can be found near the Sierra del Alto Rey.

Hiking Trails

The Senda Etnográfica de Villares de Jadraque is a short, highly informative walk that introduces visitors to the rural culture of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara. It is also an easy hiking trail marked with green waymarkers and featuring six information panels.

The Colmenar del Tío Cleto includes beehives made from tree trunks as well as unusual beehives carved into the rock. The Senda Etnográfica also explains the Cercas hincaderas: livestock fences made of horizontal quartzite slabs reinforced with large gneiss slabs known as Hincaderas.

The Senda Etnográfica de Villares de Jadraque features a bridge more than 300 years old, built from quartzite, slate and gneiss slabs. It is an example of the black-and-gold architecture typical of this area.

Routes

The Senderos de Oro y Arcilla hiking trail crosses the Cristóbal and Bornova rivers as well as numerous streams and ravines, and passes through oak and holm oak forests. The route leads to the ruins of an Arnal or beehive oven, an apiary with walls made of quartzite slabs and a single-sloped roof.

A circular route of approximately 11 kilometres runs between Villares de Jadraque and Hiendelaencina along narrow, well-marked paths. The A pie por la Arquitectura Dorada route is 23.5 kilometres long and runs from Arroyo de las Fraguas through Zarzuela de Jadraque and Villares de Jadraque to Hiendelaencina. Culture and History

The Molino de Villares is an old 16th-century mill located beside a bridge over the Bornova in a rugged landscape. The Romanesque church of Villares de Jadraque dates from the 12th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century.

The church has a single-nave layout with an attached sacristy, a round-arched portal made of rubble masonry and a stone bell gable facing west. A small hermitage stands at the highest point of the town and offers a view over the entire town centre; the La Magdalena pilgrimage takes place there in April.

A small museum in Villares de Jadraque displays the machinery of a forge and numerous tools formerly used to make iron parts for livestock farming and agriculture.

Traditions

The tradition of the Vaquillones in Villares de Jadraque takes place every year on Carnival Saturday. Participants wear coarse linen sacks as masks, wooden Amugas with cow horns and livestock bells hanging from them, as well as red capes.

The Vaquillones use a whistle made from a pig’s bladder to communicate without being recognised. During the celebration, the Asociación de Vecinos La Alegría offers everyone interested a lunch featuring traditional migas serranas before the Vaquillones set off.
