El Cubillo De Uceda – Church, Trails and Festivals

In El Cubillo de Uceda, the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was listed as a monument in the category Bien de Interés Cultural. The church has a Mudéjar apse, a Renaissance façade and a wooden coffered ceiling in the Mudéjar style above the nave. Construction is thought to have begun in the 12th or 13th century, with alterations carried out in the 16th century. Several scallop shells can be seen on two tomb slabs in the church.

Culture and Architectural History

The traditional rural architecture of the Campiña includes façades in aparejo toledano, featuring brick courses and masonry made of rounded stones. The village also has traditional buildings made of stone and adobe bricks. There was a strong tradition of producing roof tiles and bricks.

The Ermita de la Soledad is located near the southern edge of the village and has a double-arched portal bearing the engraved date 1565. The Caserón de Hernando García on the western edge of El Cubillo de Uceda dates from the late 15th or early 16th century; according to tradition, it is considered the first building Hernando García constructed when founding the village. The Fuente de Abajo is located at the exit from El Cubillo de Uceda towards Uceda.

Trails and Landscape

The Camino Mendocino, also known as the Camino Occidental a Santiago de Compostela, passes through El Cubillo de Uceda and forms part of a route through 14 municipalities in Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid. The Camino Mendocino de Santiago is a 97-kilometre route from Guadalajara to Manzanares el Real.

The signposted trails in the surrounding area are suitable for family walks and easy hikes. The El Cubillo de Uceda–El Cubillo circular route begins at the village’s Plaza Mayor. The Ruta de la Raña runs from Casa de Uceda for several kilometres along the Camino Mendocino to El Cubillo de Uceda; the circular route is signposted with markings for the Camino Mendocino and the Ruta de la Raña.

The landscape around El Cubillo de Uceda consists of dehesas, fields and gentle hills. The circular route offers views of the Sierra de Madrid and the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara. Festivals and Religious Traditions

Carnival is one of the most important festivals in El Cubillo de Uceda. The annual Fiestas El Cubillo programme includes a bicycle ride or walk to La Pascuala. The programme combines devotion to the Virgen de la Soledad with music, sports, activities for children and popular festivities.

The San Simón festival was celebrated in El Cubillo de Uceda in 2025 with music, a communal meal and traditional performances. The programme included a procession, a storyteller and a San Simón procession followed by the burning of a figure.
