Puerto Lápice: Culture, Windmills and Routes of the Ruta del Quijote

The Plaza de la Constitución, also known as the Plaza Mayor, is a well-preserved Castilian-Manchegan square complex in Puerto Lápice, with two levels of wooden arcades painted in an Almagro-style color. The Puerto Lápice windmill group comprises El Hidalgo, Sansón Carrasco and Farol de la Mancha.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. del Buen Consejo was built as a parish church in 1859. The Venta de Don Quijote was built in the 18th century and later renovated in modern times. In the 1960s, the Ermita de San José was created by converting the municipality's original cemetery into a chapel. Religious celebrations take place there, including the blessing of the palm branches and the procession locally known as “del borriquito.” The Virgen del Buen Consejo and San Antonio Abad are among the most venerated religious images in Puerto Lápice. Beneath the wooden arcades stands a bronze sculpture of Miguel de Cervantes, depicted seated at a desk with a pen and paper.

According to the Itinerarium Antonini, the Vía Laminium ran through Puerto Lápice and connected southeastern Hispania with the Meseta. The remains known in Puerto Lápice as the Puente Romano belong to a section of an ancient road that connected Amensarca, Álava, Bastia and Consaburum, present-day Consuegra, with Laminium.

Routes and Landscape

The Ermita de San Isidro is located two kilometers from the center of Puerto Lápice; a paved, signposted path leads there from the southern side of the town. This path forms part of the Ruta del Quijote, and pedestrians and bicycles have priority on it. It runs through vineyards and olive groves along the Arroyo Valdehierro. From the windmill complex, a natural viewpoint offers expansive views of the Manchegan landscape. Many country paths running through Puerto Lápice form part of the Ruta del Quijote; the routes there are used on foot and by bicycle. The municipality of Puerto Lápice lies partly within a Site of Community Importance and the Montes de Toledo Special Protection Area for birds. It is considered a critical area for the Spanish imperial eagle and the lynx. The Puerto Lápice–Campo de Criptana–El Toboso route is approximately 70 kilometers long. The windmills can be reached via a road that climbs toward the Sierra. The Feria y Fiestas is scheduled for September 7 to 10; the Semana Cultural is planned for the penultimate week of August.
