Revelillas: Holiday apartment at the foot of La Lora

Revelillas lies at the foot of La Lora, surrounded by beech and oak forests. A circular route from Revelillas via Pozo de los Lobos to Mirador de Valcabado begins and ends in Revelillas. It is 10.51 km long, has 375 m of positive elevation gain and an estimated total duration of 4 hours.

Forest, views and trails

On the way back to Revelillas, the route passes through the beech forest of Monte Ahedo. It reaches Pozo de los Lobos from Plaza de Revelillas via an ascent on a track through holm oak forest; after 200 metres on the marked turnoff is the wolf trap. Pozo de los Lobos is a dry-stone construction that was used for wolf hunting over many centuries. It consists of two triangularly arranged walls extending several hundred metres apart and converging at a deep, circular pit in which the wolf was intended to be trapped.

One of the most frequently used paths to Mirador de Valcabado leads through the Hayedo de Revelillas. In the surroundings of Revelillas, Mirador de Valcabado is located on the edge of La Lora de Valdivia in Pomar de Valdivia, Palencia. The viewpoint can be reached via a route from Revelillas; it lies on a natural balcony above the beech forest of Monte Ahedo and overlooks the Valderredible Valley.

A mountain-bike track leads west from Revelillas past the Arregueras reservoir, which was built to supply irrigation water, and reaches Pomar de Valdivia after just over 8 km.

Culture and history

The parish church of San Esteban has Romanesque origins and was extensively remodelled during the Gothic period, including in the 15th century, as well as in later periods. Its Romanesque fabric includes the Romanesque bell-gable wall and the baptismal font. The carefully decorated, hemispherical Romanesque baptismal font made of calcareous sandstone is located in the church. A route to Romanesque baptismal fonts includes San Esteban in Revelillas.

Cueva del Tío Moreno is a small, well-preserved hypogeum carved into sandstone beneath the cemetery. Outside Revelillas, four threshing-floor huts have been preserved. The local festival of San Esteban is celebrated on 3 August and 27 December.

Getting there

Revelillas can be reached via the CA-273, which connects Villanueva de la Nía with Quintanilla de las Torres in Palencia. About 1 km from Villanueva de la Nía, leave the CA-273 onto the CA-751 towards Villamoñico, then continue to Revelillas via a local road.

Archaeology

A Neolithic axe found in 2017 on a plot of land in Revelillas in Valderredible has been held by the Museo de Prehistoria y Arqueología de Cantabria (MUPAC) since 2019 and was intended to become part of its collection. Because such objects are rare in the Autonomous Community, the find was described as highly interesting and could be one of the oldest signs of human settlement in the valley.
