In Puente San Miguel, the Historic Garden was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Historic Garden” category in 1986.
Culture and History
The Historic Garden of Puente San Miguel can be visited free of charge by prior arrangement. On 28 July 1778, the delegates of the “Province of the Nine Valleys of the Asturias de Santillana” gathered at the Casa de Juntas to establish the province of Cantabria. Every 28 July, the Casa de Juntas is the setting for the “Día de las Instituciones” festival, which commemorates that historic gathering. The Centro de Interpretación del Día de las Instituciones was recently opened in the Casa de Cultura in Puente San Miguel. It is a new facility intended to bring the origins of Cantabria closer to visitors and younger generations. In Puente San Miguel, the apse of the former Romanesque church now serves as the abutment of the bridge that crosses the Saja River at this point.
The historic sites and the interpretation centre emphasize different aspects: the Casa de Juntas preserves the connection to the history of the foundation, while the Casa de Cultura communicates this subject to visitors and younger generations. 28 July also connects the Casa de Juntas with an annual commemorative event.
Nature
The Parque de La Robleda is one of the natural areas highlighted for its beauty in Puente San Miguel. The gardens of Puente San Miguel cover more than seven hectares and have almost developed into a botanical garden, where magnificent specimens can be admired.
Two different scales come together in the natural area: the Parque de La Robleda is highlighted as an individual natural area, while the gardens cover more than seven hectares and have almost developed into a botanical garden. These different green focal points can be considered separately when planning your day.
