Ruente: Spring, Forest Paths and Historic Buildings

Ruente is home to La Fuentona, a karst spring from which the Ruente River originates.

Nature

La Fuentona occasionally runs dry for several minutes to several hours and then starts flowing again with the same volume of water. In its surroundings, there is a park with a picnic area in beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

Saja-Besaya Nature Park covers 24,500 hectares and extends, among other areas, across parts of the municipality of Ruente and the municipalities of Cieza, Arenas de Iguña, Cabuérniga, Los Tojos and Campoo de Suso. For your planning, the spring site, park area and nature park can be considered as different scales alongside one another.

Paths

The route to Robledal de Monte Aá begins on the outskirts of Ruente and follows a signposted forest track and a narrow marked path through an oak forest covering more than 400 hectares. When planning personally, you can consider the type of path and the size of the forest separately. For individual selection, different forms of path stand alongside one another: the forest track and the narrow marked section form a sequence at Robledal de Monte Aá; the old road to Ucieda and the circular route from Monasterio have different starting points and route characteristics. This allows you to align your planned day's activities with the character of the path, the connection and the starting point without equating the routes. The differences therefore remain clear for a visit to Ruente.

The Camino de Pinillas connects Ruente with neighboring Ucieda via an old road; one section passes beneath a natural hazel-tree canopy. The “Ruente–Ucieda–Ruente” circular route begins in the Monasterio district of Ruente. The starting point, route and landscape feature offer different points of orientation.

Culture

The medieval bridge of Ruente has nine shallow round arches made of masonry and connects the districts of Ruente and Monasterio. Next to the bridge of Ruente, there is a small Humilladero set into a wall. Inside, it preserves a polychrome wooden cross with scenes from the Passion and formerly served to show travelers the way and enable them to pray.

The Church of Santa María Magdalena in the Monasterio district dates from the 18th century and preserves a Baroque altarpiece. La Nogalera Casona is a Baroque Montañés manor house dating from 1786.

The Palacio de Mier is a palace complex from the late 19th century in the Historicist style and is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural. In terms of culture, period, architectural style and function can be interpreted as different distinguishing features.
